Number of new Tolkien things I care to watch, or put my faith in: ZeefrickingOh.
Rings of Power can frick right off.
Leave all of it alone.
Go ruin something else.

God i hate AI so much. Nothing will ever come close to how awesome the original peter jackson trilogy was.

This is AI. It's not a real show or any show coming.
Is basically just fan fic.

Some good AI work could produce visually stunning pieces that are faithful, such as the various battles. I think Lore of the Rings did a few early on that were ok, this one is clearly more advanced in what they do. Makes me wonder how long before someone can stitch together something full-length.
I'd call it "fan interpretation" instead of fan fiction, and it's basically the same as making a movie from a book. It's just that the producer is using a different medium than traditional filming.
I also wonder how long before the Tolkien Estate starts to try to squash this stuff, and whether it might lead to them releasing some of the other works to become movies before someone beats them to the punch.

I'd be pretty surprised if the Tolkien estate gives much of a crap about this kind of stuff. There's a diluge of AI Tolkien related content out there and it's only piling up. Now if somebody tried to monetize it main stream... That would be a very different story....

Basic FAN fic is vastly superior to anything Amazon will produce regarding Tolkien.

That video is a good 5-6 minutes. Using the "how fast things progress" idea, I figure we can get videos up to 30 minutes long or longer, within a year or so. I think at that point they get noticed.
I'm wondering how long it would take a small group, say 5 people, to do something feature-length. I figure you start with "a cast" and "sets/locations", and then pass them out among the group so the videos would be consistent. Each group does a scene and you splice them together.

To that end, I'd say there are varying levels of such "fan fiction":
1) you have an exact copy of the source material, and you are just interpreting what characters and settings etc look like.
2) you have a pretty faithful rendition, but add in details and dialogue where there is none given.
3) you alter or omit some parts, to 'clean it up' for time or storytelling purposes. *this is where PJ's LOTR movies are.
4) you take the basic info from the books, and create something new, that fits into the book story without breaking things.
5) you take details from the books, and make up something "cool" - such as Batman meets James Bond.
6) you take details from the books and change most of the major parts- this is where Rings of Power is at.
I'd say some of the stuff on youtube is at 1 or 2; more faithful than what Jackson did. It's simply taking a small part of the story and attempting to give a rendition.

it's just that some fans get financial support from studios.
JD Payne may be able to speak Tolkien Elvish, but with all the money in the world, he has no CLUE how to bring Tolkien's Middle Earth to the screen.
When I speak of 'fanfic', I think of non studio produced works, crowdsourced, day actors who'll likely never see a stage beyond a community troupe.
Jackson's LOTR isn't fanfic'.

It's also not faithful to the books; there are some significant changes.
To me, unless the author is involved with the film production, the work is done by "fans". Of varying degrees.
I agree Rings of Power is not made by real Tolkien fans, they don't understand what can be changed and what's essential. Jackson did for the most part... although he had the benefit of doing a movie trilogy most thought unmakeable, and he did it justice.
