Can anyone tell me about The Kistachie Forest west of Fort Polk and a lil north of Pitkin area? Got invited to hunt this area with some friends and I’ve never been.
Looking on maps it seems it’s a lot of clearcut and pine trees. Is this correct?
Also what LDWF area is this? Can’t tell if it’s area 2 or 3. Thanks

One of the few places you can hit a grand slam - coral snake, rattlesnake, copperhead & cottonmouth all in the same place.
In other words, watch where you step.

Guess I’ll be searching for snake boots before this trip!

I assume you are talking about the Calcasieu ranger district which would be south of Fort Polk, NW of Pitkin. That will be area 3. Mostly pine plantations with SMZs running through them that can offer plenty of thick cover and food sources. The other portion of the Calc ranger district is east of fort polk, closer to Alexandria and in Area 2.

I assume it’s the Calcusieu district then cause we supposed to be around Fullerton area too.
Don’t think we’ll be close to Alec

Kisatchie has its own hunting regulations, it doesn’t fall into the LDWF areas. You can google “Kisatchie hunting season 2025-2026” for details.

Kisatchie has its own hunting regulations
You also need a special permit (free) to hunt those two spots.

wear orange! Lots of folks roam those woods.

Without a doubt will have orange hat, vest and an extra orange vest on my climber or loc on while walking with it.
And I always just keep the vest and hat on while in my tree. Whether public or private. I don’t wanna be mistaken for a deer or hog ever!

I saw tarantulas at Red Dirt about 25 years ago and never visited again.

I wonder why suppressors are prohibited.

Honestly no idea. There seems to be a lot of variation in eye position in snakes.
This one was very chill. It sat just like that for a while as I moved around it taking pics. Got some pretty good shots.
