quote:

Nearly two dozen suspects, some of them armed, brazenly targeted a California jewelry store during a smash-and-grab robbery as organized retail theft continues to pose a problem across the state.

Surveillance video at Heller Jewelers in the Bay Area city of San Ramon captured a mob of masked thieves storming into the store on Monday and smashing displays with hammers and pickaxes, authorities said.

They made off with around $1 million in merchandise, the San Ramon Police Department said.

I believe many organized smash and grab gangs are transnational... if they can get it out of the USA, they can sell it.

It's no big deal. The jewelry store had insurance, or should have, so what's the harm, really? If they didn't, well, bad on them.

they can sell it, but for pennies on the dollar

No way it's worth all this effort & attention-grabbing risk

Smash-and-grab gangs are a key component of transnational organized crime (TOC) networks, which operate globally to facilitate and profit from the illegal resale of stolen goods. These retail thefts are not isolated incidents but rather a specialized part of a larger criminal enterprise that uses a variety of methods to move stolen merchandise across jurisdictions and national borders.

What % goes to the on-site thieves taking the risk? It's not going to be high

What risk? It's California.

Edit... also, these gangs are very often made up of youth. Less risk.

The mere fact that Gavin freaking Newsome, with his absolutely atrocious record, is even being discussed as a viable presidential contender speaks volumes about the “Idiocracy” from which this country is having a hell of a time extracting itself.

Seriously, it’s ridiculous.

yes, many robbery gangs work on the Oliver Twist Principle, where juveniles will face less time if caught

But I presume the juveniles still don't want to be caught, especially for something that is a relatively small payoff for the on site thieves

They often don't get caught.. they are released when they are, and they are hooligans- they don't really expect much out of life.

Yep.

It’s almost an insult to insanity to simply call it “insane”.

Gotcha. But yeah, like Kafka said, they'll get almost nothing for it.

The kids they recruit face very little risk, so whatever they "get" out if it is more than what they'd get otherwise.

Transnational Organized Theft... nevermind, I'll post screenshot... it's really a very big deal and there's a reason it is rampant in California.

Thanks for posting that. I always assumed it was just local knuckleheads causing a ruckus. I didn't realize how deep it went.
