Not sure if this is correct board. Fostering a new dog that has a high prey drive and can scale our 6’ wood privacy fence. Squirrel on the top of the fence results in dog over fence every time. Obviously, more training will help. But what about wireless fences or a low amperage elective fence at the top of the wood fence. Suggestions welcome.

I wouldn’t put any kind of wire at the top. Too easy for the dog to get hung up. Happens a lot. Paw goes on top of the wooden fence, dog’s body goes over the wire and comes down on the other side with the paw wrapped in the wire. Drop any electric wire down at least a foot or so from the top.

We have a dog, essentially a "foster failure " that we couldn't adopt out because, among several reasons, she could easily scale our 6 foot privacy fence.
We moved, then I built an 8' privacy fence, yet she can still scale that, too.
She uses the 2x4 cross members as "steps".
Bottom line, there are no perfect solutions in my opinion.
I was once told to try "coyote rollers" long cylindrical rollers mounted at the top of the fence that would keep a dog from getting over a fence.

A single hot fence wire on the inside about a foot from the top should work. They need to hit it before they reach the top for it to work.

It doesn't work for all dogs. Some are just fine with paying to play, and will take the pain to have a chance at the squirrel.

How about an underground fence 1-2 feet from the wooden fence? We've always had the underground fence and has worked great for multiple dogs.

Probably would work well too.

Same thing applies though, some dogs will take the lick to get the squirrel.

Love the concept of an underground fence but if a dog wants out it’s gonna take the shock and go on through. My labs would remain in almost all the time, but if they saw something they wanted they busted through. One even learned to duck her head as she neared the line at full speed so the collar would hang a little looser and away she’d go.
In OPs situation, like downshift said I think a hot wire a foot or so below the top of the fence would be his best option.

I have a Anitolian sheppard we did the UG wire it didn't stop him we did a shock collar it was a speed bump ti actually HD to build a ledge around the top of the fence with closet L brackets and put a fence board on it. He couldn't get his jump up and over .
It looked like crap so I got I've tht draped down andover the sides of the board made it look much better

I had a catahoula cur once that learned to climb chain link fences. Eventually, I strung a hot wire along the top of his fence and it worked wonderfully. He got shocked one time and never tried to climb the fence again.

I didn't think GSD had the same acrobatic skills as a Belgian!
