WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested that he is working to reestablish a U.S. presence at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, four years after America’s chaotic withdrawal from the country left the base in the Taliban’s hands.

Trump floated the idea during a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he wrapped up a state visit to the U.K. and tied it to the need for the U.S. to counter its top rival, China.

“We’re trying to get it back,” Trump said of the base in an aside to a question about ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Asked again about the proposal hours later on Air Force One, Trump offered no details but again bashed Biden for “gross incompetence” and said the base should have “never been given back.”

“It’s one of the most powerful bases in the world in terms of runway strength and length,” he said. “You can land anything on there. You can land a planet on top of it.”

This Trump is nothing like 1st term Trump, and I mean that in a negative way!

A lot, and it will take some degree of boots on the ground fighting to get it done.

Good, when I deployed to Afghanistan, I spent about half my time in Bagram and the rest out at the various FOBs. BAF was very strategically placed and built up to accommodate more air traffic than most any other airfield in the world. Plus, it's size acts as an additional defense against the random artillery attacks

Thank you for your service.

How should we get it back?

Idiot Biden had our troops and airmen there bug out in the middle of the night without even telling our local allies.

I honestly have no idea how we get it back after Biden gave it away. I don’t know if there is some financial package to get it back, but if there is an avenue to get it back, we should pursue that

Did Trump 1.0 put 100k annual price tag on H1Bs?

Trump 2.0 is far better. On an earlier thread about this it said DJT was negotiating peacefully with Taliban. Anybody thinks we are getting boots on ground will get duped just like they did with the Iran Strikes = WW3

There’s no way to protect and operate a base that size without a sizable force. Doesn’t matter how much we pay them
