The fact that this dude is our 3rd safety just blows my mind. He would be a lot of teams S1 around the league.
I'm still having flashbacks from our safety play from the last 3 years.
It's absolute amazing the 180 coach Baker and Raymond have been able to do on our secondary.
I cannot be happier for this young man, and I hope we start doing more 3 safety looks to get him on the field.
He was the highest graded defensive player in college football on Saturday per PFF at 96.2.
If our offense can continue to get a little better each week, I feel like this defensive will keep us in every game.

I was excited about him before the year.
When he got significant playing time early in the season last year as a true freshman, you knew the coaches saw something.
When that playing time dwindled and you saw guys like Sage freakin Ryan take over, you knew it had to be issues with responsibilities/alignment.
But once that got taken care of, which appears now it has, he was going to shine.
And here we are

Sage Ryan and Jardin Gilbert would be in good position last year and just completely whiff. Like they were trying to tackle without the use of their arms.

This is mind boggling. It seems like it doesn't matter who Coach Baker or Coach Raymond plug in, they all seem to ball.
Man, if only we had a below average defense with JD5 we would have won it all.
No, we had to have 2 of the worse defenses literally of all time at LSU.

Not to say I wasn't happy we got both Cooley and Haulcy from the portal but man looks like we would have been fine with Spears and just 1 of them too.
I sure hope we can rotate Spears in a little more this season, I think you can also start to make arguments he could be a starter over Cooley...and Cooley hasnt played poorly by any shape, Spears is just making some big time plays. Spears has been targeted 3 times and has 2 picks, and against a high level QB not some nobody mid-major/FCS guy.

Spears has the highest ceiling in the entire safety room . High 4 star pedigree, 6’4, rangy as hell and can flat out run. Was shaky agaisnt the run. I think part of bringing up Cooley and haulcy was for spears to have some hardnose vets and push him to elevate his game instead of being handed a spot.
The cream rises to the crop it appears the lightbulb is turning on for spears he will be hard to keep off the field with his cover ability and added physicality. Baker has stated multiple times he’s the hardest on spears because he knows how great he can be it seems that tough coaching is paying off.

Spears is a dog. His read on Lagway for the pick 6 was elite, you can also tell he added some good weight in the offseason. He’s a big kid

Was an insane read he flat out fooled lagway but drifting to the middle of the field and perfectly timing his break on the ball. Pickett look like he was in position to make an impressive PBU as well if spears didn’t read the route so perfectly. He def looks noticeably bigger and more filled out while retaining his athleticism. Kid has Kyle Hamilton type potential

Love to see a hometown kid ball out too.
Love the transfers but it’s hit different when a kid down the road balls out for LSU
