How long should a pool pump last?

We have a 1 hsp that's 4 years old and crapped out today. Had it running 8 hrs a day.

I don't know about "should", but over 20 years my experience is 2-5 years
Learn to replace bearings, capacitors, and/or leaky seals, and you can milk a a lot of extra work out of them, and a lot cheaper, with just a bit of effort

what went wrong with it? Might be an easy fix

20+ years, bearings every 4-5 years.
I’ve been through a few bearings but my pump is just oxidized aluminum with no paint on it at this point. The inside is nice and shiny.

Remember, all it takes to make the problem go away forever is a few loads of dirt!

Motor is shot. $500 just for the motor.

A pool pump motor should not be $500 and the motors are rarely the part that goes out. They are pretty easy to rebuild or swap a motor.

I rebuild the seals whenever there is evidence of leaking. The motors last for at least 4 or 5 years. I run mine sometimes 24/7 in the summer months to keep the pool cooler using the spray return.

I have ordered my last two motors from Perry’s pool pump. They sell rebuilt motors. Couple hundred dollars delivered. They seem to last ~3years.

A good PMSM with controller is about a thousand. Double through pool companies. 1-2 speed single phase motors will end up costing much more on your power bill. It isn’t just about motor efficiency, it’s about being able to dial in just the flow you need without pressuring up your system.

My first one lasted 14 years, so pretty good. I had a 4 speed but went to a single speed for the new one as I rarely altered the speed anyway and was half the cost.

A lot of them have poor suction piping setups which causes cavitation and beats them up. If you are failing pumps a lot more often than you think you should, check the suction line pressure. Keep the suction strainers clean.

Mine died yesterday. Saw it (and heard it) coming

What happened?

It’s been really loud for few months. I had some other work done. Guy told me it’s likely in its final days.
Yesterday it didn’t come back on at 8am. Having it replaced Monday
$2700

If you could hear it then probably bad bearings. Could try to change those out and see if it fixes it, would be a LOT cheaper.

Got a Pentair setup with 1 hp pump. Relaced at 4 years and at 8 years just last week. Starts humming loud and leaking at the bottom at the pump joint.

They are now lasting about that long. Amazon has whichever you need for around $200. You can change the motor in 20 minutes with only a socket wrench needed. The pump part (the front that the motor mounts onto is most likely fine. It could be just the start / running capacitor - always keep an extra on hand for only $15. Pop the back end cover (about the size of a quarter) off of the motor and give the drive a spin with a screwdriver. If it wont try to get going, its probably a dead capacitor. If the motor is truly shot, you'd probably have heard the bearings grinding for a while now.

That was your bearings failing.

Come on! That's a $200 / 20 minute fix on your part if you want a new motor. Even if you don't own tools or are not mechanically inclined, you know someone that can do this easily for a couple of beers while they work.
