I haven't seen this mentioned. This is a modern interpretation of Kurosawa's High and Low. They are both Crime/Thriller/Dramas.

We enjoyed it. 85% on the RT Popcornmeter/88% on the Tomatometer.

It is different enough from High and Low so that if you have seen the original, you still won't know where it is going. I recommend watching High and Low if you haven't. I just checked it is on Max. I would note it is a long movie so be in the mood for reading a lot of subtitles when you start it.

To clarify the Kurosawa film High and Low is on Max, the modern Highest 2 Lowest is on Apple.

There is a not so subtle State Farm reference about 3/4s of the way through.

High and Low is a masterpiece. Not all that thrilled to see the rap-ified "Spike Lee Joint" version of this. I did like DW and SL in Inside Man

His appearances to promote this movie have shown Denzel to be a total fraud and sellout.

IIRC, there are only two rap/hip-hop songs in the score, and one is a plot device. There is some free style at one point which again is a plot device.

I would bet HBO's stream count for High and Low goes up exponentially in the next month or so.

I think the new often opens the door to the old. I had never seen the original The Amateur until recently (though not a gem), nor had I seen the Gregory Peck version of Cape Fear until after I saw the Scorsese/De Niro version. Same with Oceans Eleven/11 and probably a bunch more that aren't coming to mind.

Truly one of the worst movies I've ever finished. The score and acting made it like watching a soap opera.

Denzel and Jeffrey deserved better.

That was awful.

I didn't hate the movie but I found something funny coming out of it.

So I think that you the viewer were supposed to find that A$AP Rocky's character was delusional because he was a shitty rapper with delusions of grandeur because he just wasn't good. I thought his song that kept playing throughout the movie was supposed to be a gag, because it was so bad but the Denzel's son character thought it was good.

So I am at the gym one morning working out listening to my Kendrick Lamar station, and that song pops up on the playlist. I laughed so hard because the fricking guy actually put in on the soundtrack for the movie and its awful.
