It was a catch AND a touchdown.
(in case no one has addressed this yet)

You think the SEC league office wants an SEC team to lose to an ACC team? Is that what you are saying?

Everyone knows this except for people that hate LSU and “well ackchyually” losers.

He's far from the only idiot running with this theory.

I think they overcompensate to avoid this narrative. Mind you the review was for a touchdown or out at the one. It was ruled a catch on the field. That wasn't indisputable by any means.

The rule was redefined in the past decade and it's taken on a whole new life void of common sense. It will correct at some point, but those calls will continue for the next year or two, unfortunately. The current expectation for a "catch" is unreasonable in my opinion.

Ok, he catches it. Does LSU still win?

Here is the rule. It's a bad rule, but the call was correct:
quote:
NCAA Football – Rule Governing “Going to the Ground in the Act of Catching”
From Section 4, Article 3 (Definitions – Catch, Recovery, Possession):
> 2. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain complete and continuous control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or in the end zone. This is also required for a player attempting to make a catch at the sideline and going to the ground out of bounds. If he loses control of the ball which then touches the ground before he regains control, it is not a catch. If he regains control inbounds prior to the ball touching the ground it is a catch.

This didn’t happen so this rule is inapplicable. He caught the ball and entered the end zone on his feet with the ball in his hands. What am I missing.

that rule you quoted applies to a catch made in the EZ. If the catch is made outside the goal line, the receiver with the catch only has to cross the goal line to be a TD. Not any different than a RB running across the goal line and fumbling after being hit in the ez. It was not a correct call. It was a clear td because the official that called him short of the goal line (obviously blind or corrupt because the receiver's entire body was inside the pylon). So he called the pass complete and OOB. IF not OOB, then it has to be a TD, regardless if he fumbles it after crossing the goal line. It clearly should have been a TD by their own rules.

the rule was probably made for in air catches, not feet down catches, which would make sense.

Hopefully what we saw with officiating isn’t indicative of what we will see all season

It's not worth debating. I'm an LSU fan. I hate the rule too....but, it's been the rule for a while now. Brown was going to the ground in the process of catching the ball.
Read the rule. It doesn't matter where on the field it happens.

FWIW, I think Birmingham hates LSU (see Peterson's interception). In this instance, they applied a BAD rule correctly.

As I said, not worth debating. I initially thought like you did.. that he had completed the process...but, I think the rule is interpreted to mean if you're falling down while in the process of catching the ball, possession of the ball has to survive contact with the ground. That's what happened with Brown.

The rule is not applicable here. He had possession and broke the plain. Just the same as a rusher with possession breaks the plain.
It’s def worth debating. Refs screwed the call and could’ve cost us a big win. People just letting this ride bc we won anyway. Those refs made several terrible calls. Hopefully they catch hell for it.

Why did the official Mark it out at the One?
