Give Kelly credit for having the team ready. This opener was different.

The usual suspects on here were ready to fire him again around the 2nd quarter. Hell, maybe they still want him gone, that’s fine.

That said, the team was up for the game. They were prepared for the game. They overcame adversity from the officials, and the dumbass decision to not take 3 at the end of the half.

We made some big plays on the ground. Many players had a moment of two where they flashed some great skills. The conservative game plan bothered me, but there did seem to be some openness to the offense in the second half. Nuss was criticized on here, and I’m not sure why. I thought he played a fine game despite the conservative calls.

Defense was quick, attacking the ball, and schemed great. They adjusted with adding a spy, and it paid off.

What I liked most was that the team was disciplined, didn’t commit stupid penalties all night, didn’t have constant confusion on the field and blown assignments. Guys weren’t bobbling snaps, having kicks blocked, etc. It’s a far cry from what we’ve seen in recent openers.

It wasn’t perfect, but beating Clemson on the road, overcoming refs, and getting a monkey off the back is huge.

They were no more ready than they have been the last few years. The difference was they were better.

The tacking vs FSU in 2023 was atrocious.

This is most sound I have seen our defense since pre 2020. But yes we do have the Jimmy and Joes with X’s & O’s

He still refused to take the points on fourth down. Same story different year. Baker and the Defense came ready to play though.

Yep. Frustrating as hell. Opener after opener.

That bothered me. You don’t give up 3 on the road like that.

The difference was the defense.

The last few years, other than at Fla State, we lost on last minute drives.

They held last night

If by better, you mean they played better, then yes. Those FSU games were disastrous. Fundamentals sucked, the team beat itself and/or gave up. USC was also a shitshow for a while.

Last night, the guys were focused and clearly on a mission. I didn’t get that vibe in last year’s opener. They previously played like a team that read the press clippings.

I’m going to call bullshite on this take.

They looked confident, calm, cool and collected. Very different vibe this year compared to past years.

There were alot of similarities to USC last year.

Biggest difference was the defense came through in the 2nd half

Yes, but this is a true road game. I think this Clemson team will prove to be a tad better than USC last year and 2022 FSU. LSU could have easily shite the bed coming out for the second half, given how the 1st ended. They didn’t. Defense held and Nuss led essentially 3 TD drives.

Kind of like the 2019 team that was also very talented and experienced.

Guys, Kelly, Baker and Sloan didn’t all of a sudden figure out how to coach. But they did all of a sudden have a massive talent upgrade.

I’ve been critical of Kelly, but I think he’s done a good job of stabilizing the program. He took over a bad situation and had to deal with the transition into NIL. He will piss me off from time to time, and he’s stubborn, overly aggressive, but I think we were too locked into Saban. Since his retirement, it seems like the CFB world has opened up a bit. Every top team seems to have a flaw here and there. OSU won a title with a coach they wanted to fire.

I am concerned about Sloan’s playcalling. I don’t think Kelly ever forgot how to coach, and I don’t think he suddenly changed last night. I’ll stand by my statement that this team was more engaged and prepared than in year’s past. They had reasons to collapse and didn’t.

We were ready because we finally cleaned up what O left us and BK got us players who can help us get to the promise land. BK is a great winning coach.

This is correct. The talent level on defense is light years better than previous years under Kelly. All three levels have massively improved. Offensively, we played like it was the first game. We had way too many penalties and too many mistakes in general that will be cleaned up in future games.

Couple of things that were markedly better than previous seasons.

1) OLine knew what the hell they were doing and the blocking scheme was sound

2) WRs were blocking & receiving very, very well. This will be huge through the season!

3) Defense is very good across all three levels and tackling was spectacular. Cooley had some misses but expect him to rebound.

4) Players never took their foot off the gas. Everyone was locked in.

BK deserves a lot of credit for righting the ship after the last few seasons. He also deserves credit for his offseason emphasis in the portal and recruiting. Moreover, he brought in extra/new coaches to improve deficiencies in scheme & technique. If we can sharpen up some clock management, situational play calling, and pre snap execution we will go far.

LSU looked like one of the best fundamentally sound teams over the weekend. That gives us room to grow in other areas. Need Sloan to trust Nuss and his athletes. Move the ball relentlessly, don’t give the other team a chance to catchup. Outside of maybe 3 teams on the schedule we should score on nearly every possession.

Absolutely! That game was not as close as the score indicated regardless of the blunders by the refs.

LSU had total control which is something we have not seen since 2019.

When Kelly starts taking points when they are free and starts closing out games like he wants the players to close out plays; I’ll sing a different tune.

Same game we watched 4 years in a row. Difference is we won this time.
