Anyone ever flown in a Hughes 500 or MD 500?

I have the opportunity to take a ride in one or the other coming up soon. It will be my first time in a helicopter.

It's strictly for fun and entertainment. I'm hoping for a thrill ride.

I believe I'll have my pick. Any advice on which one might be better?

Thank you!

Nope, nope, nope.

The vertical glide aspect of either is no bueno.

Helicopter rides for me are only in response to a medical emergency

Honestly, not a fan either. But it's a free ride and I've never been in one so I figured I'd go for it.

Been on multiple OH-6s back in the day. NOE flight is a rush in one of those little buggers. I will ride in most any rotor wing except kits or a Robinson.

I had to look that up.

That one is cool too. I wish they were bringing that one as well.

What is a NOE flight?

Their is hardly any difference at all. McDonald Douglas helicopters acquired the aircraft design from the Hughes aircraft corporation back in the day. There are some model differences in some of the later MD versions:4 vs 5 main rotors blades, one has more of a rounded nose versus a pointed nose, they made a NOTAR version which had a ducted thruster instead of a tail rotor and some of the md530s have bigger engines. Unless you're smallish baw you don't want to sit in the back because the main transmission is in the cabin area also the drive shaft comes through from the 45° mounted engine to drive the transmission there is a cover over it but it also intrudes into the area so spacing is limited in the passenger compartment. Now if you can ride up front it's awesome. Very crash worthy design.. the egg-shaped fuselage can take quite a beating and keep the people inside alive. The OH-6 back in Vietnam had quite the safety record for keeping people alive in crashes you think nobody would have been able to walk away from, the egg shape design makes it quite tough. See if they'll take the doors off for you make sure even more exciting experience you can pretend you're on a pink team hunting Charlie south of the DMZ with an AH-1 cobra flying top cover while you bait Charlie into taking a shot at you.

Yes. Both. The Hughes 500 buzzes around like a bumblebee.

Never flew in any of those two. But these two choppers are my ride to and from work every three weeks.

One hasn’t truly lived until having flown NOE in a CH-47 with a Vietnam War era pilot(with flashbacks), at night, with the rear ramp open…

Is this because they know maintenance and upkeep is flawed, and want to minimize injuries ?

If there’s any way you can sit up front do so. I finally took a copter ride while killing a day in the Grand Canyon and got to ride up front. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Completely different perspective from a fixed wing aircraft.
