If you already have one, what's the best part?

Anyone in Louisiana below I-20 have one?

If you get up close to the Arkansas line you will see homes with a basement every now and then.

I live in the Midwest and so have a basement. My take on them is that they’re a great way to accumulate more shite that you never look at and which ends up just being thrown out once someone dies.

It doubles your house size if it's finished. We have our WFH offices downstairs and do our normal living upstairs.

Cons - We don't have attic storage, so there are two small "cold storage" rooms we use to put our attic stuff. I wish there was a little more space for that, but it works well enough.

Great place to store Christmas items instead of the attic

I feel like if I had a basement I'd be down there getting trashed more often than I'd like.

Something about a big screen and a basement bar that would be dangerous I think.

Brother lives in Ohio and this is what it did for his previous home. It was pretty awesome

If done right they turn into awesome man caves.

No. Between foundation wall problems, sump pumps, radon, constant worrying about gutter draining far enough away from the foundation, etc. I’d would not have a house with a basement.

Yeah, that’s the other path. My family’s and my in-laws’ experience has gone in the “Oh, just take it to the basement” direction.

They can be made into nice, useful spaces, for sure.

2 types of basements in this world:

Basements that leak and basements that are going to leak.

That being said, I love my basement. Never had one til recently.
Great tornado shelter, too.

Grew up in WI with a finished basement and it was awesome. We didn't have AC until I was in HS, so the basement was always much cooler than upstairs. When I had friends over, we hung out in the basement and it felt like we were separated from my parents upstairs.

I wouldn't. Always a potential for moisture issues.

When i was a teenager, we had water issues in the basement of a split level. So my brother and I spent all summer digging a big ditch about 4-5' deep around the house. My dad obviously helped when he wasn't at work. Had to rent a jackhammer to bust up the concrete on the front porch. Had to put something on the concrete foundation walls and fill the trench with rocks for drainage.

It would have cost a fortune if not for 3 people working for a few months to get it done.

Im scarred for life after that huge project.

I suspect that's why we have those ridiculously high haystack roofs so we can store more treasures without them being wet.

Yeah, this is a great benefit. It can be 90+ here in the summer and the basement stays around 72 or less with no AC. We have a heater for the basement, but rarely turn it on in the winter and it stays about 67.
