Im in the process of selling my boat that I’ve owned for the past 10 years. I have a title on the boat and trailer, but nothing on the motor. The motor is a 2007 and I only remember having to register the boat and trailer at that time.

The guy I bought the boat from passed away approx 6 years ago so Im unable to go to the original owner. I am also unable to find my bill of sale. What are my next steps in being able to provide a title for this motor?

TIA

Louisiana?

LA doesn’t title motors, unless you request it and that only started with new motors about ten years ago and is voluntary.

You have a title on your trailer (DMV) and registration (no title) on your boat (WLF).

texas, gotta have a title for the motor . But in 60 years of talking to green jeans never once have they asked for a motor title. They run a scan on the boat registration numbers only. So if you are doing a repower, new or used the motor title is a nonissue.

Are you selling to someone in state or out of state?

From your current situation, assuming you are selling to someone in Louisiana, to make the transaction, you need:

Notarized bill of sale listing the boat and trailer, separately
Notarized/signed boat title
Notarized/signed trailer title
Hand them your WLF Registration card and trailer registration if you have it.

From there you are done.

The buyer will take all of that, fill out a boat registration transfer form and submit to WLF, then also get a new registration for the trailer at the DMV.

Outboard titles in Louisiana are only continued if they were optionally titled or if they came from another state and had a title as part of the sale when coming in state.

I bought a boat in 2017 that had a boat and a motor title.

My understanding was that if the buyer of the New boat financed it, that the boat and motor would get titled.

So if your boat wasn't financed from the dealer, the motor probably doesn't have a title.

Should be a no issue either way.

Banks won't give you a boat loan without a motor title. Just sold mine and the guy just got a personal loan for it.

Not true. I financed a 22’ cc bay boat second hand last year and bank just asked for serial number of the motor and pictures. Used the boat five times and sold it to a guy on FB that financed it and they didn’t ask for title to motor.

The guy's bank that I sold to would not.

If it's LA to LA and the buyer is not worried don't worry about it.
