I was shocked to hear that but I suppose it's not that surprising.

Equipped with this knowledge perhaps it might be worthwhile to invest more in foster care systems and leave these people better equipped to face the real world once they age out of those systems

Youth in foster care are much more likely to face physical and sexual abuse as well

Seems like there could be a lot of mileage by improving the foster care system

ETA link with cited study

quote:

In the USA, estimates suggest that approximately 50% of young adults who identify as being unhoused1 at any given time were once in foster care (O’Neale, 2020). Data also indicate that at least 40% of young adults exiting foster care are prone to facing housing insecurity within the first 2 years of aging out of child welfare services (Shroyer & Brennan, 2019). Episodes of housing instability are correlated with increased risk of poor health and delayed educational and career achievements, including heightened prevalence of preventable disease, lower likelihood of future employment, and more frequent interactions with the justice system (Cobb-Clark & Zhu, 2015; Desmond & Sandel, 2017; Narendorf et al., 2020).

By no means am I saying you are wrong, but I am curious about your references.

Its very hard to accurately survey the homeless.

If you would just google it you would find numerous sources making this claim

Would it really be that unbelievable that this would be the case?

They can't even tell you how many homeless there are much less the percentage that were foster kids. You could say foster kids are more likely to eventually become homeless and that would be believable. The same with kids from a single parent home.

I don't know enough about the foster child system to know what needs fixing.

Uh, that's likely how they ended up there in the first place.

No. We want to see what references you found to make the statement, not search for something and read a bunch of trash results that are skewed by other things we've searched for over the past few months. Your feed is also skewed this way, and I'm sure you've probably searched for microplastics and similar subject, clicking on blogs and trash media sites like the Independent, which further skews the future results you will get.

Considering how many people in their 20s live at home it seems pretty obvious that these people would be homeless if they had nowhere to go to

I just searched how many homeless people were in the foster care system

Most results are in the 50% range

Now if I had put the 50% number in the search I would see your point

There is no source that I could post that would satisfy any of you

You took the AI result at the top of your search and didn't actually look at any of the results underneath to find a study, who it was funded by, how big the sample size was, what city it was in, what the ages of the participants were, or any of that, did you?

If you do better research, you can make stronger arguments to skeptics, and avoid repeating shite that is trending because of TikTok.

OP forgot a link.

Does this imaginary link tell us how many homeless are vets?

Nope

Why would you assume that?

I know this board. I could post 10 links making that claim and some fig like you would cry that you didn't like one of the sources and assume that the claim can just be completely dismissed

So let's just say that my claim is false and it's only 30%. That's still a problem.

The poster pretty specifically laid out that it’s not unbelievable by saying:

By no means am I saying you are wrong

Dude just has questions about and/or wants better sites.

Yeah I provided a link with studies

I suppose it wasn't an unreasonable request. I was just being lazy

A kid in foster care is already fricked up long before going to foster care.

Need better parents and to stop telling everyone a child is choice.

No argument there. Which is why perhaps the foster care system needs to do more to ensure that they have a better chance when they age out of the system.
