Blood clot into thoracic outlet surgery, the career ender for pitchers. Done for this year and a good chunk of 2026 at minimum. Has said he will retire at the end of this contract (2027).

Does he throw another MLB pitch at age 36+ coming off TOS surgery?

What percentage of pitchers who have undergone this procedure had their career ended due to it?

Highly unlikely which is why I'm thinking the Phils will be all in to get Skenes in their clubhouse in a couple of years.

It has to be high. Strasburg's career was ended due to it.

Hate it for Zach. Good dude and a Georgia boy.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a career killer for pitchers. This is brutal news for Wheeler.

Some of those guys pitched again afterwards, but their days as effective pitchers were done.

Pitching is not a natural act. You’re probably better off playing football than stressing your body throwing 100 mph.

There are two kinds. He has the same kind as Merrill Kelly had a couple years ago, not Strausburg. The kind Strausburg had is called "Neurogenic" and involves compression of the nerves. Involes tingling and loss of feeling in the arm. I can see why it's completely debilitating. I think Beckett also had the neurogenic type.

I think there's a good chance Wheeler's back out for spring training next year.
