Twenty-five years ago or so we did the inside passage cruise and then after rented a car to drive to Denali and then on to Fairbanks. After leaving Wasilla, somewhere along Hwy 3 we stopped at a small park/pull off along the Susitna River. We were about 100 miles from Denali, but had a clear view of the mountain from that far out. It was our best view we had, once we got to the park the mountain was engulfed in clouds the two days we were there.

Highest base to peak climb in the world. The Denali massif is so large that it creates its own weather patterns.

My dad had the privilege of working with Vern Tejas back in the late 80's/early 90's. Vern was the first person to ever make a winter solo ascent of Denali.

I was in the Denali Park one day when we had a clear, unobstructed view of the mountain. They told us that was unusual because the mountain is so big it creates its own weather system and is usually obstructed by clouds.

Very cool. About ten years ago I was on my way up the highway just south of Anchorage and we had a full view of Denali. A local pointed this out to me and said we only have this a few times per year. I feel lucky and fortunate.

Alaska is a really terrific trip.

One of my brother-in-laws was a NPS ranger at Denali decades ago.

They used dog sleds then to allow Rangers to maintain a Winter presence near the mountain.

I think it was 28 day hitches for two Rangers, maybe it was 14 days a hitch. It’s been a long time since we talked about it.

He said those sled dogs are not really domesticated.

Let me guess that was taken Tues morning? We tried the night before and only saw fog! Woke up Tues morning saw the sun for the first time in 5 days and told my wife you know he's showing off today!

Unfortunately, we had to catch our flight in Fairbanks. Apparently, we just missed getting stranded on the Dalton Hwy with the flash floods by a day as well. Fortunately, we were there for the rain and left before the floods!

We were in Juneau today; Absolutely gorgeous!

ETA: Just noticed the time stamp of your post. That was Sun we were escaping the floods that day! Awesome pic! Glad you were able to see it.
