What is your take on pro sports clubs building stadiums with tax payer dollars?

Haven't seen this topic come up on the forum, at least not recently.

I think it's one of the most despicable things possible personally.

Complete and absolute crap, especially considering these multi-billion dollar organizations will hold the cities hostage and threaten to leave if they don’t.

Isn’t it pretty standard?
What is your reasoning for being appalled?

The billionaire owners shouldn't be asking the peasants to pay for their stadiums?

It's gay.

With very few exceptions, it does not add to the local economy.

It's corporate welfare.

Of course

And I'm not saying the new stadiums aren't nice, but the locals should at least get some sort of perk like discounted tickets and concessions if they're going to be asked to fund a large portion of it.

Well, people want a team. A pro sports team means you’re a big city, a city that matters. It brings prestige. And since there are fewer teams than there are suitable cities, the owners can shake down the locals. It’s always been that way.

Personally, I want sports.

The economic "analysis" hyping their positive impact is usually bullshite.

The number of teams is always a couple too few for the current market to create fake scarcity.

Seriously, a "consortium" can drop a few billion on the team but cannot build a billion-dollar stadium?

"It's always been that way" is a mindset that usually leads one down a path of stupidity.

Owners make millions.

Then they tax their home city for a billion.

When will my company get a deal like that?

The only way it should even be considered is in the form of a loan.

And locals should receive perks, such as discounts, until the loan is paid off in full at minimum.

All I know is it's extremely hypocritical to support this type of welfare and bitch about welfare intended for the poor.

Standard? Does that make it ok?
Stop subsidizing all sports…. Period.
Put it up for vote, it’ll fail and be stopped.

I don't think it should even be put up for a vote

Let them have a fund raiser. If you want to help them build the stadium then go donate to their fundraiser.

You can be entertained by football on TV

There isn't a requirement to have a stadium in your city
