Mullen was notorious while at State for taking these "smaller" rent-a-win games lightly and making them closer than they should've been.

They were due for stagnation if he had stuck around. A 7-8 win baseline at State is super, but he was about to enter his 2nd decade there. The familiarity was starting to become obvious
Also, the dude gave 9 years of his one life on earth to Starkville, Mississippi. I don’t think he or his family are devastated at how things turned out

1 game sample size is way too small to figure out how he is going to do at UNLV, see Billy Napier's first game against Utah as an example, but what we saw yesterday seemed like the checked out, burnt out going through the motion Dan Mullen that got him fired at Florida.
UNLV spent a lot of money by their standards to hire Dan and are expecting him to elevate the program beyond what Odom did. If Dan is still truly checked out, he could be fired by the end of year 2.
