From the District Attorney Perry Nicosia

quote:

St. Bernard School Board filed suit to stop the LIT facility because Port NOLA does not own all the land needed for the project. The school board owns a huge portion of land and operates a school where the LIT facility is to be located. Port NOLA has invested heavily in the last few years convincing the news media, state and federal officials and residents that construction of the LIT facility will begin in 2025 and be in operation by 2028. This was shown in court to be untrue and mere propaganda. The LIT facility is not a done deal as evidenced by the sworn testimony of CEO, Beth Branch, who acknowledged the LIT facility is a mere speculative project without a permit and without actual cost projections. Further, Port NOLA testified that it did not have funding to either begin the project, much less complete the project. READ THE ENTIRE PRESS RELEASE FOR DETAILS!!

Sounds like a massive failure by the Port.

One question is why does a school board own a large portion of land? Property taxes are heavily tilted towards school related financing.

I'm sure the Port could just build SBP a new school or buy them some new land and work it out.

Of course they could but the majority of Parish residents are dug in against the Port. The School Board especially.

That covers the acreage of properties ? They also own other property as well. If it was listed as property owned by St Bernard parish is one thing but it’s not it’s owned by the school board.
Also suspect that you have no knowledge of situation or pay property taxes to be angered enough about it as school millage is generally the greatest reason of highest part of taxes.

They probably get most from Domino Sugar, Valero, and PBF and the schools are good enough

With that being said if the port is offering them a free elementary school they should take it. They’ve already added curbs and sidewalks for a new site on Judge Perez in Violet.

It hurts the whole cause that the port will destroy the parish if we keep an elementary school next to it

Or it shows the school board really dont GAF about those kids. It’s Smith elementary so that may be a thing

Property taxes forever on land you own is a problem, high property taxes are even worse. Those companies property taxes can be absorbed into total expenses and earnings can be adjusted because of. Regardless of what they pay the average homeowner still suffers yearly expenses under threat of loss of property. It use to a 7 year stretch of tax due to clear up but now it is 3 years which has been shown that after the loss of person who normally pays the significant other or family that may be living across the country somewhere finalizes the estate it is not uncommon to be in arrears and loss of property is imminent. But the fact that a single public entity has millions of dollars in assets and vacant at that while begging for increases in millage is beyond credibility of good governance

What ? Now I know you don’t pay taxes. Homestead Exemption is only on the first 75K not the whole value. It’s also a state law that that only a very few states even recognize.
