I am looking to relocate and have been looking at the Picayune / Carriere area. I have noticed further north around Popularville it is more rural. I am contemplating whether it's worth expanding my search, and spending more, to possibly getting someplace I can hunt. Or even buying land after I relocate.

What can you all tell me about the area? Specifically East of I59. It is in the Southeast management zone.

I currently hunt around Monticello and there is definitely plenty of deer there. So that would be the comparison I could make.

Thanks

Poplarville is much nicer than Carriere/Picayune in my opinion. The town is great also. Deer are small but generally plentiful. Hogs can be a problem. I have a lease in Carriere and a place in Poplarville. The deer seem to be much more pressured in Carriere area.

Poplarville is definitely more rural if you are looking to live and hunt in the same area. I live in Carriere and have land west of I59. Definitely lots of pressure on the deer and we are loaded with hogs also haven’t seen a turkey in my place since purchasing in 2017. My friends in Poplarville and stone county towards Wiggins have turkey and seems to be less hogs. I normally have about 10-12 different deer crossing my land most seasons and haven’t seen a buck over 3 yrs old. Have only seen a handful of rack bucks make it more than one season on camera. That said I really enjoy living here.

I live on the Carriere/Poplarville line, on the west side. My land borders old river wma. There is some great deer hunting along the bottom land of the pearl river in carriere and poplarville. Try and do your homework best you can, because I've found hunting quality can vary greatly around here from area to area withing just a few miles. There are lots of hogs, and turkeys seem to be making a good comeback in pearl river county. I've been up here since 08, I'd be glad to any specifics i could about a certain area.

Thanks all for the input. It seems like West of 59 is similar to an area I used hunt around Kentwood in terms of consistency. To say it was hit or miss would be an understatement.

In general Picayune on northward do appear to be nice areas.

Also elevation rise is a good 100 feet between picayune and Poplarville. Not that it really matters just a. Interesting fact. My home in Carriere is 100’ higher than my last one in Houma. Find land that borders timber tracts or wma etc and it will hunt bigger. I have a nice year round creek that runs through and along side my land that seems to really hold animals on my place

I have hunted our place in Poplarville most of my life. We are west of town.
Deer are small and very jumpy, but there are a few big bucks around, just at 3 am or if you're lucky to see them chasing.
We burn, so turkey numbers have been great for us. We shot 3 toms last season on 175 acres, and there were a few left in addition to jakes. We are even seeing/hearing a few coveys of Bobwhites.
We used to have a lot of hogs, but we don't see them as often. Part of me believes its due to us burning. I'm really not sure. I just know that around the time we started burning, 6-8 years or so, until now, hogs are not as plentiful.

Only experience I had with property in poplarville was it was ruined by local dog hunters. Not their property but blatantly trespassing and almost daring you to report them. I was looking at a potential lease of 6k acres and ran into 3 different trucks of dog hunters cruising the roads.

An acquaintance bought land there and had to pay a local sheriff detail to keep them off his property. A biologist surveyed it after he bought it and said local dog hunters had decimated the deer population for their lease next to his and all of his property
