AITAH for wanting to keep a Dog that ive had for 5 months?

Had a relative of my ole lady let us sit a dog back in Jan for 3 weeks then again at end of Feb for 3 weeks again. Both times we gave dog back. Then a discussion was had about he homing the dog so we took him in April. The woman was going thru serious mental and financial hardships etc. He is a sweet boy who is 2 years old. We have become attached. He is 2 year old shepard and truly believes i am his father. He wont leave my side and hates it when anyone else goes near me. We have had him since April for 5 months now and the woman(crazy) all of the sudden wants him back. I said frick NO. I am upset. I have spent 2k on doctor bills, grooming, housing arrangements etc to get him straight. He has never been in a kennel living at my house. That last time I got him he was malnourished, now he is 15lbs heavier and healthy. He is my boy. Can this woman take him away from me? She is threatening to get a lawyer.

I think you can bargain with her. Does she really want the dog or is this a mental fit? Pacify her for as long as you can. Wear her out.

I’d make sure I had proof of paid vet bills & screenshot any texts between y’all where anything regarding rehoming was mentioned
If she’s truly crazy I’d make sure he’s not left outside during the day where she could take him from the yard

What state are you in? There are official surrender forms you can download and have someone sign to surrender a dog to you. From there, you can go to the vet and change ownership on the chip and the medical records all over to you. You said you've already gone to the vet and spent some money on this dog, did ownership conversation ever come up at all?

No, just told our vet and groomer he was given to us by a relative who couldn't care for him.
