One day in Paris?

My brother and I (both seasoned citizens) are traveling to France and England in September to visit our dad’s WW2 bases (and fly in the exact same airplane he flew to Bastogne, but that’s another story.) Paris and London are basically just airports for this trip, but we will have most of an afternoon and overnight in Paris before catching a flight the next morning over to London. I’ve been to London but never to Paris - is there time to do anything in our limited time there besides just ride by the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe? We’ll have a car until we drop it off at CDG; thinking we’ll probably get a room close to the airport the night before we leave. Ideas?

You mentioned Bastogne (I hope you're going during December,) so there's an easy answer. The Army Museum. The artwork on the hundreds of cannons they have is astounding. You can walk there from the Eiffel. I think I spent five hours there. There is also a Holocaust museum there. It's super cool to see mortars from the 1600s with a diameter bigger than your head, old school armor, etc.

I'd look into cancelling your flight and take the Eurostar between Paris and London, train does the journey in just over two hours and you leave from the city and don't have to deal with security hassles. CDG is also a mess and out in the middle of nowhere.
Of course, your flight may be part of a connecting itinerary to the states or elsewhere which, if so, ignore my idea.

One afternoon and evening?
I would spend the afternoon sightseeing. Start at the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower and proceed down the Champs Elysees, through the Tuileries, through the Louvre courtyard and across the bridge to Ile de la Cite and Notre Dame.
At night I would have a big blow out dinner at a spectacular restaurant.
I wouldn’t stay near the airport. Enjoy Paris on your one night and just drive to the airport the next morning.
The Army Museum is interesting and Napoleon’s tomb is awe inspiring, but if I just had one afternoon, I wouldn’t spend it there. The WWII section is fine but you might as well go to the one in New Orleans.

Only spending a few hours in Paris for a first time is an absolute crying shame.
If it was ME, I'd take the time and stay as central as possible, wake up earlier if you need to get to the airport. Experience Paris.
Stay in one of the first 6-9 districts as close to the Seine as you can, see the Eiffel, walk along the river, see Notre Dame. Have a nice dinner. Don't rush, walk around and enjoy it. Have a pastry in the morning.
Call it a trip
If it was ME, I'd take the time and stay as central as possible, wake up earlier if you need to get to the airport. Experience Paris.

We had a similar timeframe in Paris. Big mistake was taking all our bags out of the Paris airport. We had to wait in security and then pay a big fee per bag to recheck them the next morning. If possible, I would leave them with the airline and take an overnight bag. We ended up just cabbing from the hotel to The Tower and then asking the hotel for a rec on a really nice french meal to end the trip. We were tired from almost three weeks in Italy.
