My wife has some brushes she runs through it then I use my leaf blower and blow it out periodically.

I found a brush kit to attach to a drill.
Detached the dryer vent to the wall(vents through the roof) and used a leaf blower to blow out the loose stuff.
Prep'd a bunch of electric tape strips before starting and as I attach each length of of pipe, they get taped at the junction.

Never reverse the drill to prevent unscrewing a piece and leaving the brush in the middle of the vent. Why I taped it; in case habit took over.
Added lengths until it wouldn't push further, when it hit the roof cover.

Then brushed it up and down; remove a length, brush up and down....until you have the brush out again. Replace the piece that connects the dryer to the wall if it is one of those accordion style hoses.

It didn't seem like much came out, but it really improved the dryer function.

Leaf blower. Makes a helluva mess on my roof but it goes away fast.

When I had a shorter run in a previous home: Old water hose with t shirt tied at the back end.

Now, 35ft run: One of those pole by pole kits with a brush and a drill.

Honestly the hardest part is getting the dryer connected again in a tight spot.

My vent goes horizontally about 8 feet to the outside wall. Usually just go outside with a shop vac and shove the vac hose through the outside vent. Those rooftop vents sound like a pain in the arse to clean.

My current house is 2 feet away from the outside vent. So no issues.

But my previous house had a vent that went through the attic and out on the roof. Had a professional clean it one day and was amazed at how much was in the vent. Clothes went from taking 60 minutes to dry down to 20 minutes. PSA - if you have a vent like this, clean it.

(My neighbor had the pro at his house and asked us if we wanted ours cleaned as well. I had no communication with the guy other than writing a check. Unfortunately I don’t know his name nor company.)

Remove the mesh screen on the outside. Also open the dryer front and check the internal vent ducting. We did a new build that’s almost 5 years old now. Internal duct in the dryer wasn’t sealed from the factory. Lent slowly escaped and got into the heating element tube. Thank GOD I was home bc when that sumbitch ignited it was like a tender box.

Also, make sure you have a a couple fire extinguishers ready to go in your house at all times.

Repair guy said he had always heard stories of dryer fires but had never seen one in 13 years.

That's my setup. Dryer near an outside wall with a 3 ft. run of that heavy duty aluminum flex pipe, so no kinks and run to an outside vent with the flap that opens when I'm drying clothes and closes when not in use.
