On Thursday at midnight, steep retaliatory tariffs Donald Trump slapped on dozens of countries went into effect. “IT’S MIDNIGHT!!! BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TARIFFS ARE NOW FLOWING INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!” the president wrote on Truth Social minutes before the levies snapped into effect. “Tariffs are flowing into the USA at levels not thought even possible,” he added in a subsequent post.

Hours later, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared on MSNBC, where he was gently coaxed into admitting that while the government might rake in plenty from the new taxes, American businesses and consumers are the ones paying the penalties.

“So if someone here, an importer, wants to buy Brazilian products today or tomorrow and import them, they’re going to pay 50 percent to the Treasury, and so who writes that check,” host Eugene Robinson asked Bessent of the new tariffs leveled against the South American nation.

Bessent first stated that tariffed Brazilian imports could simply be replaced with “substitutes” from other nations, before being pressed by Robinson to clarify “who writes the check to the Treasury,” if the product does come from a tariffed nation like Brazil.

“Well, the check is written to the person who receives it at the dock, in the U.S.” Bessent replied.

“The check is written by the person, the receiver. So the tariff is paid in this country by the importer. Is that right?” Robinson pressed. Bessent then said that the exporter could lower their price to retain market share. Robinson pressed again: “But the check is written by the importer, at the dock?

“Yep,” Bessent said. “And the importer can pass it on or not.”

What a stupid point you're trying to make.

The importer of record can be the Brazilian company's local affiliate.

I'd abolish the income tax system and go 100% to the consumption tax system.

Pay as you go and April 15th is just another day.

The point is a good one. Trump is taxing the hell out of us and bragging about billions of dollars of new taxes flowing into the treasury. That money comes from us.

One system puts pressure on a group to be self sufficient.

The other system makes the group depend on outsiders.

Which system do you think we should have?

If an importer used to write a $1,000 check to an exporter for a shipment of goods, but now the check to the exporter for the same goods is $750, but he also has to write a check to the US government for $250, technically the US importer is paying the tariffs, but it's the exporter that's feeling the pinch, not the consumer.

Japanese car companies immediately reduced their wholesale price to importers in the US. This allowed the importer to pay the tariff and end up back at the original price.....ensuring no increase to the end consumer.

Yes the importer wrote the check, but the foreign manufacturer paid for it.

Did your kid pay for that starbucks cup of coffee with a credit card you pay off each month? Who paid for that cup of coffee???????????????????

Its why we are not experiencing run away inflation.

But its not that.

Instead of 1000 he now writes a check for 1250.

Not following you, the importers local affiliate (which is a USA business) pays it, and passes it on to their purchasers.

Not sure of your point.

I'm sure that all the invaders from the south that I saw on tv with their smart phones paid the same as we do for ours. These companies rip off Americans just like the drug companies do. We support the entire world by being gouged for products.
