Oxidation on 2 Year Old Painted Shutters????

I had a highly recommended company wash my windows and shutters today and some of the shutters now have a white-ish type stain on them? The owner of the company says it’s oxidation of the paint?? These shutters are 2.5 years old and are original with the house. Would they already have oxidation or is this guy full of it and his chemicals stained my shutters?

Had a similar issue recently. House washed and shutters looked like shite. They were painted with same Benjamin Moore paint as the house. House looked great. The house is hardy siding and the shutters are Spanish cedar. I guess the bleach/paint/spainish cedar combo was not compatible. Had to get all the shutters repainted. I have a big walls of shutters on my porch. Double sided. $3700 to have them all repainted.

Assuming the shutters are an accent color? Are they darker? Interesting issue here, possibly the house is done in a lighter color and you just can’t tell? BM is a decent paint and don’t think it would be oxidized after a couple years. I would guess it’s a film or damage from the cleaner used.

Yes they are wood and they used a bleach solution.

Yes his bleach probably ruined your shutters. I hate bleach for cleaning anything on a house and it ruins more than it helps.

This is what pisses me off. I don’t have time to clean all these shutters so I hire a professional to do it and he screws it up but blames paint oxidation. I googled “cleaning shutters” and it constantly says not to used bleach or a bleach solution. Try to use water, soap or detergent but not bleach. A simple google search tells me this and this “professional” doesn’t know this and wants to blame it on “paint oxidation”. I’m not paying him. This is going to cost me more than I have to pay him to clean the windows and shutters.

I've had Spanish Cedar shutters painted dark green facing the setting sun. The house gets a soft wash every 2 years chlorox and Jomax. There's never been a fading problem. My guess is that your guy used far too much chlorox and let it sit. What happened with you foliage?

Bleach should not hurt any decent exterior paint. Chances are, it is normal aging of the paint. Would your shutters happen to be exposed to the sunlight any time of day?
