Survival guns that fail when it actually counts

The idea of a .410/.45 revolver seems solid for survival, but in practice, the Judge is more gimmick than go-to. Accuracy is inconsistent, and .410 out of a short barrel doesn’t give you much power or spread control. It’s big, bulky, and doesn’t really excel at anything. For defense or hunting, there are better tools for both. You don’t want to bet on a jack-of-all-trades revolver that doesn’t really master any of them.

Its a 45 you can use for fairly close range varmint control.
There may be better tools for both, but then you are carrying two things instead of one.

I take it you haven't had a JTTF moment yet
ETA: hell, there's a country song centered around it
The Judge is an OB legend.

Judge to the face? How did I miss this song…

Who is saying it is a “survival gun”? It is a fantastic snake and home defense gun. I don’t know who author “JoshC” is but after reading that I think he is either stupid in general or not very knowledgeable about guns. In addition to the judge, he lists the following as “survival” guns:
Remington 770
Remington 597
Keltec Sub2000
Mossberg Maverick 88
Century AK clone
Rossi .22 rifle
Savage Axis
It looks like he just made a list of guns he doesn’t like.

I didn't click the link but these are just low priced firearms and a few aren't terrible. Ones I would never consider a "survival gun" though

I have a sub-2000 . It’s a camp / truck gun. I tend to be a little gun snobby. I bought the sub-2000 during the Obama gun scare because it was cheap.
I have fired boxes and boxes of ammo through that thing and it has ate it all.
Not the most accurate firearm , but I would take it with a quickness in a survival situation.

This is his list of survival guns or a list of the worst guns ever made??
I have never messed with any Keltecs so that one may be different but all the others?
the 770 is terrible

Shoot yourself in the face with one and see what happens

Taurus Judge
Hi-point Carbine
Ar-7 survival rifle
This was his complete list of “survival” guns.
Again, I have no idea who author ‘JoshC’ is. But he doesn’t seem to have much credibility.

I thought the Mossberg Maverick was supposed to be a solid gun.

There are four or five good guns on that list. I own three of them, including a judge. The only real dog I see is the 770. Most are just entry level price point guns.
It is about expectations. For example if you spend $200 on a Rossi .22 rifle and expect it to have the fit and finish of an $800 Browning t-bolt or cz 457 you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a budget .22 that goes bang when you pull the trigger and is accurate enough for most things, and that you don’t feel bad about banging up in the boat or sxs you will be happy.
If I go buy a $30 plastic cooler because I need a cooler in a pinch I don’t expect it to be equal to a $400 roto molded cooler .
If I buy a $99 red dot I don’t expect the same out of it as a $600 Trijicon MRO.
Again it is about expectations and being realistic.
If I compare my 18’ Kenner with a new 65’ Viking the Kenner will lose. But I can afford the Kenner, the Viking not so much. Why should I hate my little boat because there is something bigger and better?

For a survival firearm, I'll take the Ruger 10/22 Charger Ultimate Custom Build. Very lightweight, folding stock, accurate, and you basically have a machine gun if needed against multiple attacking targets.
It has a binary switch for normal single shot mode, "fully" semi automatic mode, or safety.
For the video below, it's age restricted so you have to click the Watch on YouTube link to see this badarse 22 rifle.

It is. Especially the value you get with the low price. You can find them almost anywhere for less than $250. Look a little harder and you may end up under $200.
It is almost perfect for someone looking to get a cheap shotgun and then can move into more expensive guns with more features later in. The Maverick 88 is about as stripped down as it gets outside of a single shot break action. But they work and will shoot anything.
I bought my wife a 20 Guage Maverick 88 years ago. I ended up getting the 12 Guage to throw in the farm truck later on. It's been just fine and I don't lose any sleep over it getting beat up in that truck.
