I’m going to buy a few new Dekes shortly.
Looking at Heyday, GHG, and Avian X.
What does the OB recommend?

Me personally, the cheapest ones I can find. It’s really not as important as some people make it out to be.
Super realistic looking decoys definitely don’t hurt anything, but they’re not necessary. If money isn’t an issue, I like American made G&H.

Unless you need them this season because you haven't got any or they are beat up beyond repair if you can wait until about January Macks and Sportsman Warehouse and Rogers will have a helluva clearance sale...70-80% off prices aren't unusual.
The decoys I use are older G&Hs and Flambeaus. All of them have been painted a couple of times at least. There have been a BUNCH of ducks killed over them from Washinton State to Florida and New Mexico to up state New York and into British Columbia. They are pretty rough but they still pull birds. The Flambeaus are 40+ years old. I suspect any of the new works of art are better at pulling birds but I don't know that for a fact. If I owned most of the new ones I'd be terrified they were gonna get damaged somehow because they are almost to pretty to use....

3rd for G&H. I've got some over 20 years old that I hunt over. No babying duck equipment. They don't have the fancy paint jobs, but that is to lure hunters not ducks. If the paint job is spooking the ducks they're right where you want them.

buy 1 doz nice pintails, 1 doz nice grey duck and buy 4 dozen cheap old beat up decoys off marketplace and paint flat black. (I also have a dozen nice canvasback decoys just for fun)
More birds have and are killed over old decoys (Flambeau/etc) than over avianx, etc. Ducks are looking for shapes--hell i watched multiple flocks of pintail decoy on a few mud lumps on a shallow flat last year bc they thought it was ducks
People overthink decoys--and this is a hill i'll die

And milk jugs painted black, “Family Groups” is another one that kills me
along with the new “salt grass marsh invisible camo”.

Yall coonasses need to remember that there are still people actually targeting mallards and desirable puddle ducks. If everyone was some mudmoter inbred ripping up the marsh hoping to sky blast a scaup, 3 coots and a gadwall then yea, yalls backwards arse opinions on decoys would hold merit. But that is not the case, and good decoys absolutely matter, especially with small spreads of a dozen or two. You're not killing limits of mallards over black milk jugs or faded arse Flambeaus anymore.

If you are where ducks want to be, any decoys will work. If you are where ducks don’t want to be, no decoys will work.
That’s an oversimplification, but it’s 90% true.

There's more mallards getting shot over old flambeaus and black spray painted decoys in timber & rice in NorthLA/Arkansas/Missouri/MS Delta every year than over the two dozen LifeTimes thrown out by Mr. Alpaca hat in his Prodigy boat "targeting mallards and desirable puddle ducks" on Felsenthal and the White River lol.
Also didnt know pintails, greys, and teal were undesirable puddle ducks--but I'll happily shoot yours. Just make sure to waive to them as they fly past you and be sure to point them toward SELA.
Happy for y'all "mallard purist" to stay north instead of coming to the coast to hunt the "undesirables" on our opening weekend tho. but of course y'all will all be in venice, wax, and pecan island like clock work opening weekend.

I can't speak for NorthLA, but I own properties and hunt the other 3 extensively. I can confidently say that you're a fricking idiot. Stay in the marsh Tbob.

Dang... Someone's feelings got hurt.
The OP asked about decoy opinions. Didn't realize your opinion was the only opinion.
I still ask that you Point em south for me, if you don't mind.

So you’ve done extensive research on high $ decoys vs milk jugs and it conclusive ?
How old you Baw? Me and thinks there’s a few of us on here that might school ya on that duck hunting.

I’d ignore him. At some point he became an a-hole on all boards. Or maybe he always was.

Yes, he has a personal vendetta against anyone from Louisiana and knows everything there is to know about duck hunting. It infuriates him when people don’t hunt like he does.

I don’t pay enough attention to know specifically But do know that on this platform, in general, he calls everyone idiots about all topics.

I love avian X, also have picked up quite a few GHG and northern flight over the years.
If you take care of the good ones, and don't shoot them they'll last forever.

Whichever brand makes the most realistic spoonbill hens. That’s what Louisiana ducks are accustomed to

Remember buying 12 dozen decoys from Security in Ellick for 24.99 dozen, flambeaus back in the 90's. You can't get a 1/2 dozen for that now.

quote:one of my most shameful events of my life. When I was about 15 went to buy a dozen decoys in Howard Brothers. They were in an open box with decoys each having an individual price tag adhered to them. Took it up to the checkout and the clerk rang up the dozen decoys for the price of a single decoy. I paid her and walked out. Knowingly stealing 11 decoys. Not a great moment. But I believe 40 years satisfies the statute of limitations on that shite.
