Bumping to keep this where someone can hopefully see it.

Lacrosse is an incredible sport to watch for family and friends, and can do a lot for a HS athlete. For a fall/winter sport athlete it can keep them in shape through the spring as well as provide skill development that will translate to their primary sport. Field vision in Lacrosse can aid basketball players and skill position players in football. Defensive footwork can make lineman and forwards and posts in basketball better for their primary sport. The conditioning is unparalleled because it is constant tempo when a player is on the field vs another cardio sport like soccer where it's more endurance, lacrosse is sprints, change of direction, with bursts of rests that will improve the cardio of an athlete. It's also a viable option for spring sport athletes who may not get playing time. I know baseball is huge here, but it's huge across the board and a lot of solid athletes get left in cuts or just on the bench that could excel at the sport. A lot of the hand-eye in lacrosse translates from baseball. Catch, throw, groundballs all come rather quickly to a baseball player making the transition.

I highly recommend parents encourage their administration to look into adding lacrosse as a sport in Louisiana, especially with the larger schools where there are so many athletes that get left behind because of how deep the talent is in the primary sports in this area. Florida, the Carolinas, and Texas have been getting much deeper at the sport for these reasons, and Louisiana has the athletes to grow this sport as well. Honestly better IMO.

Adding my post to help keep bumped as well.

My grandsons played lacrosse throughout middle & high school. Made them all much better athletes (between them they also played football, basketball, & wrestled). They only dealt with minor injuries across the sports & I know it is a combination of luck + the mix of NOT getting torn down by repetitive motion/lift style injuries you typically see in kids who "specialize" in a sport.

2 of them earned academic + lacrosse scholarships in NCAA D2 for undergrad. 1 has graduated & is now at LSU for grad school. The 2nd will likely head to LSU for grad school as well. They've really enjoyed their experiences & I know my kids enjoyed the savings on tuition/etc.

Neither of them were big enough for football scholarships. Lacrosse was able to allow them to utilize their athleticism to better their collegiate paths, rather than just going to an in-state school as a NARP.

Not shitting on lacrosse, but it’s ironic to me that in a time when schools are struggling just to get warm bodies out to coach, schools just keep adding sports.

Also, post 1 we need more coaches. Post 2 ask your schools to add Lacrosse. We don’t have enough coaches already it seems.

To clarify- the cureent openings are for existing teams that have just experienced some turnover, due to a couple of retirements & full time alternate jobs acceptances.

The teams have good, dedicated kids.

Capt. Shreve HS (Shv) - head coach + asst. coach (might have been filled/waiting for annoucement?)

Red River Youth Lacrosse (Shv) - all ages, all coaches

Knowing these two pretty well I think the LLL is in need of coaches for the public teams YMS, MMS, BMS, and ARCA as the STM coaches and players help a lot with St Pius, Cathedral, and Fatima. YLL is ran and supported by the Southside staff and players ( I actually think their last night is tonight). I've heard good things about both leagues and the development over the past year. Looks like STM and Southside programs both have some players on the way up the ranks.

ETA: These are both 'rec' leagues, so volunteer positions.

Depends on what you teach and the stipend from the booster club. Because it is not recognized by the LHSAA but operates under the LHSLL most stipends come from the boosters and not the school. If you're a Math, History, or Science teacher your best bet would be one of the Shreveport or Lafayette area schools for a higher base but lower stipend. Most of the private schools will be the inverse. If an assistant working outside of the school then salary vs cost of living is honestly probably negligible between SBS, Lafayette, BR, and Nola, but the privates will more often than not have the much higher stipend.

Teacher pay is going to be what it is for the respective districts or private schools. I believe starting salary/no years of experience is around $45k these days. Bonuses for Masters & PhD.

The coaching pay is going to vary drastically across the community based vs. Public/Private school based teams. Stipends van certainly he supplemented with private lessons as well as summer/winter travel club team pay as well.

Lacrosse is an INCREDIBLE sport. I’m a Louisiana boy so lacrosse was foreign to me. I married a Virginia girl who was familiar with the sport. So when my son needed a sport she suggested lacrosse. Two years later and he loves the game and so do I. I’m an assistant coach for his rec team (even though my technical knowledge of the game is not very high).

I wish I had lacrosse as a kid. I played football and lacrosse is WAY more fun. It’s a high energy sport that does feature enough contact to satisfy the aggressive kids who like football but without so many injuries. I’m very convinced that if more kids were simply exposed to the game, it’d be a roaring success.

You are correct.

The public school teams under the LLL/YLL need some volunteer coach help. Once they get a little support behind them, there's potential for some stipend action from team/players dues.

We are hoping to get more kids interested from Broussard MS & Milton MS.
ARCA MS had enough kids in Spring LLL to field 2 teams for Sixes play, which was great. Really hoping we can build on that to get them as the next HS team in the area.

STM has multiple alums helping to volunteer with the 4 main Catholic MS feeders. We love that.
That said, we could always use a handful more to help coach more kids more skills at this age level.

I am glad to see the growth of the youth ages in Lafayette. They seem to really care about helping families get started in lacrosse & navigate the cost. When done correctly, getting started in lacrosse can be done as easy as sticks only, which nearly matches the cost for soccer. The no-travel/Rec approach is great to see as well. We need that back in so many sports.

Then once a kid wants to move up into pads, the cost for lacrosse can be very close to, if not slightly less than, football these days. And it's certainly cheaper than travel baseball with all the bats, gloves, & accessories kids are getting these days.

Great job stepping up!
You don't have to know too much about the sport. Just keep the kids motivated & giving good effort. They'll learn the rest from the coach(es) that know. And you'll learn along the way.

Strong point. 80% of youth coaching is "herding cats". The other 20% is attempting to teach them some form of fundamentals & game play understanding.

There are not a ton of high schools adding lacrosse. Some of these are high school age club teams. Much like Lsu has a club team. There’s at least one in Lafayette (Acadiana), one on the North Shore (Chaos), one in Baton Rouge/Ascension (Ascension pelicans.). Social media says Ascension had two all Americans this past season. There are many other younger teams.

unfortunately the Acadiana team folded due to poor numbers (a number of their players went to play for Southside when they started their program )

The ones that didn't teamed up with the Pelicans
