No matter how you feel about his in-game coaching Kelly has overseen the building of an NIL era LSU that will stay competitive in a way that can be sustained. He has worked to make sure that we can competitively pay the athletes and pushed for the athletes facilities that included areas for them to use social media and build their brands while immersing themselves in a professional athlete lifestyle. He worked with the AD in creating an NFL-like operation and filling the positions. He's done this and more in regard to NIL and operations while rebuilding LSU into a competitive on-field football team within the SEC.

This year we will see what Kelly can and can't do as far as coaching elite talent toward a championship, but even if he dissapoints in that regard and we ultimately part ways in a few years I am thankful for the foundation he has built for future coaches to work with.

Agree on building the infrastructure now has to get the on field results!
All starts with Game 1 and being able to make in game adjustments. He has not shown that when monument swing or other team makes an adjustment to the that he can make an adjustment to stop it and get LSU back in it! (Tx Am, Bama, Florida, etc)

It’s impressive. Will all fall apart unless we make the Playoff this year

He’s got that portion going on.

I think he does well this year.

I agree. People won’t admit it but Kelly is willing to adapt. During the 23 media days he openly said “we’re not buying players” now fast forward and he’s basically admitting he was wrong and that he’s adapting to the evolving CFB landscape.

It seems to be part of his overall philosophy on and off the field. He’s willing to try new things which is always good. Nobody wants another Les Miles who thinks it’s only his way or the highway.

It's kind of a weird irony that the one part of his job he's still yet to prove is the coaching part. I think he's done a masterful job configuring the program for the NIL era. If he can't get over the hump on the field, he will likely leave his successor in a really strong position, basically 180 degrees from what Orgeron did.

He had a good portal season (on paper). Let's see what happens.

Overall, the guy has underachieved here so far. Hopefully, this is his year.

I don’t like the one year rent a players, but it is what it is. That is how things have developed so you have to play the game. Ppl just need to accept that sometimes you team will hit a home run with the players they bring and win a championship. Sometimes you might hit a crop of duds or bad chemistry and the team goes 6-6 or 7-5. Just accept that times have changed.

Why hire a coach and guarantee $100 million dollars to him only to have to give him 4 years to adapt?

I'm on record as not being a fan of Kelly but I disagree here. His first season he overachieved 2nd was on course and last year maybe a slight underachievement but again consistent with what we've been outside of the 3 title years and a couple others mixed in. Our roster, particularly defensively, has been trash in his tenure. He's ultimately responsible but if par for the course is underachieving, our entire program is an underachievement. Take out the anomalies, high and low, and we are a 9-3 program. Kelly has been on that course. It's the $10 mil price tag and expectations that leave an underachieving feeling.

Yes he’s underachieved in a big way.

LSU football ended 2024 an unranked team. He said judge him in year 3. 2024 was year 3 for BK.

Kelly has struggled to assemble an elite coaching staff. Quality of the athletes has not been the issue. Not sure how how much LSU is paying for coaches hired by Kelly and no longer here, but the early whiffs were costly.

Defense only. His initial offensive staff literally produced a Heisman and top offense in the nation in year two. That staff proved to be elite.

On paper, the defensive staff is top tier. We need to see a big jump proportional to the improvement in talent level, but Baker did exactly that at Mizzou in year two with less talent.

We will see how sticking with Sloan as OC works out. If Atkins helps him in upgrading the run game, then he may end up being just fine. But if he struggles in year two, it will be hard to justify promoting him over trying to upgrade.
