Which flights would you choose on a long journey to Antarctica?

Just booked an 18 day cruise to Antarctica in November! Been looking forward to this for a long time and this includes Falklands and S Georgia. Also get that final leg of the 7th continent
Now we need to get from HNL to EZE.
I haven't flown Premium Economy on AA before. We did on Iberia and it was kinda meh. Below #s are for 2 people:
-UA econ to SFO, then SFO biz to MEX on Aeromexico, then MEX (lie flats) to EZE with a total flight time of about 29 hours including 6hr LO in SFO and 4hr LO in MEX. Cost for UA $457 cash of which I have travel credit that needs to be used by April anyway + 125k MR points converted to Aeromexico + $200 in taxes/fees there.
Or
-AA PE from HNL to PHX, then econ to JFK, then PE to EZE. Total flight time of about 29 hours including almost 7hrs in PHX and 1hr in JFK. Cost 159k AA miles + $11.20.
The two things I'm thinking about beyond comfort are the travel credits that need to be used anyway and then the idea of an all with one carrier aspect if we do the AA PE. The UA and Aeromexico is 2 separate bookings so we'd need to get our bags at SFO. Not a big deal with a 6hr layover, but if something did go wrong with that UA flight, it would cause stress. There's options, but it would be very annoying.
TIA for any advice/suggestions

What airframes are you flying on each leg for the itineraries?

You leave from Buenos Aires and don't need to get all the way south to USH? Or, are you already just planning to book that separately?

United econ and Aeromexico biz
Or AA PE and econ
Or AA PE and econ

This cruise actually leaves out of BA. We end up in Ush at the end.
Actually looking for suggestions of other things to do either before or after the cruise. We're looking at things like Uruguay, Mendoza, Easter Island, El Calafate, and other Patagonia places.

Well, first option, without question.

That second option sounds horrid. Flying out of your way to still have a massive Economy leg seems like a no go. DO the Economy fare to SFO and then fly AeroMexico Business there and back.

I'm definitely leaning that way for sure. I should make note there's other options to where it goes from here to Dallas to Miami to BA as well, but they're all about 28-29 hours.

I detest American so I guess the UA choice. I always flew Aerolineas because im Skyteam and it was pretty nice.

Haha yeah not the biggest fan of AA either, but was hoping for some experience on PE and if it was pretty comfy. I just like the idea of the flights being all the way from HNL with one carrier and no bag worries etc. The separate itineraries definitely has better seats the majority of the way.

What time is the flight to SFO? The only thing I'd be slightly concerned with is fog, otherwise I'd go that route. Use up your flight credits!

9:50am leave HNL and arrive at 5:20pm. Flight for MEX leaves at 11:03pm.

520pm arrival should be just fine
. You actually might be able to take the BART into the city and grab dinner on your layover. See if you can check your bags in early with Aeromexico

That's not the consensus view on Aerolineas -- it doesn't have a great reputation. I only flew them on domestic flights, but I wasn't impressed.

Yeah I used to live in SF and still have friends, so I may even take the earlier flight that lands at 3:30 if we decide to leave SFO. I also have United Club passes so we'd be good at the airport too. Although I'm not sure where the club is in relation to Aeromexico terminal.
ETA: gotta survive this tsunami first

Is there a way to fly Delta to LAX? They're part of a (contested) joint venture with AeroMexico so they should be able to through check your luggage.

Thanks for the idea. I was looking at LAX first as it has more options from HNL. Problem is the layover is 10 hours in MEX with the LAX option compared to 4 from SFO.

Regardless, even if you self connect in SFO, it seems like a better option than the AA insane Economy routing disaster.
Posted on 7/29/25 at 10:46 pm to H2O Tiger
Yeah I've settled on UA and Aeromexico. I just wanted to hear if anyone else thought differently, but apparently not

Did they fix that runway that was down at SFO last year?
