Wherever you are today, while on the road, do a quick count of the American branded cars and trucks near you.

I was recently in a European country. I counted 1 out of 10 were American. At times, 0 out of 10 were American. Curiosity got me to count once I returned to US.

Your Assignment:

At the next red light, in a parking lot, driving on interstate, whatever…

Out of the next consecutive 10 cars and the next consecutive 10 trucks that you encounter, count how many are American branded? Report back here.

I’ll start:

Nola area

3 out of 10 cars were American (1 Tesla)
5 out of 10 trucks were American

Not surprisingly, Toyota is highest non American brand in both cars and trucks.

Is this accurate? American brands share 30% of the American market?

Same or different in your world?

Little Buicks here are built in China

A decent proportion of Lexus, BMWs & MBs here are assembled here.

Marques aren't as important as they used to be.

A lot of "foreign" cars (and their components) are manufactured, assembled, marketed and sold right here in the USA. And a lot of "US" cars are made outside of the US and entangled with international finance.

The auto industry is too big and diversified to bifurcate into domestic versus imported.

Athens, GA: 7:10 American. Parking lot has 17 cars in it right now. 2 4runners, 3 chargers, 2 mustangs, 2 subarus, 2 teslas the rest are Ford or Chevy trucks.

To add, Tundras are built in Texas. BMW X platforms are built in SC. Hyundai has an enormous facility south of Montgomery, AL & is completing another enormous facility in Pooler, GA. Benz has a facility in Alabama too

I understand your point but, a lot of those cars are built here so while their "brand" might not be American, they have a sizable investment within our border.

Hear and know the ‘made here’ point loud and clear.

It’s brand relevance at the center of the curiosity. If I own a share of Ford Motor Company, how relevant are its brands?

2024 new auto sales stats seem to support your hypothesis. GM, Ford, and Toyota made up 45% of all new "vehicles" sold with GM and Toyota neck and neck for market lead with Ford slightly behind. Those 3 made up almost 6 million units out of 15.9 million total sales units. From a US "brand" perspective, GM, Ford, and Stellantis would make up about 30%.of all units sold.

Probably going to take more than one traffic light stop to get accurate data. At least two or three stops.

Rag top, bowling ball paint, chrome & gold Daytons, and a peanut butter interior. Honk next time you see me, and I'll kick on the 3 wheel motion.

The EU has long had tariffs that prevented even EU automakers from making their cars in the US and sending them back to the EU. Until DJT's trade deal, the tariffs in Germany were actually lower for a Chinese-built and branded car than they were for a Mercedes built in Alabama. These are supposed to be our "friends". FTR, I have not looked at the new deal in detail to see if this situation was reversed.

The EU consumer, and most consumers in the rest of the world, are far more nationalistic in what they buy than US consumers. If not for that, PSA, Renault and Fiat would be long dead. Ford, for a long time, was considered to be a UK brand as much as a US brand in the EU, and did very well there. They have faded in recent years.

Looking at overall product lineup sold in the US, the most "American Made" car is Tesla, followed closely by Ford. Toyota, Honda, and GM are all pretty close in terms of total percentage makeup after those two.

BMW sent a ton of cars back to the EU market that were built in Spartanburg. BMW is the largest exporter of cars in value from the US.

Which means they make them at least 6% cheaper here if they are going to Germany. The German tariff is around 4%, and they layer a substantial VAT on the tariff amount, bringing it >5%. Mercedes' CEO has previously stated that it was a big problem for them.
