Assuming our D-line rotation looks something like this:

DE: Carl Granderson/
DT: Bryan Bresee/ Cam Jordan
NT: Godchaux/ Sheppard
DT: Saunders/ Bullard
DE: Chase Young/ Broughton

We will really only have 1 or 2 roster spots for the group below:

DT/ NT: Boyd/ Ridgeway/ Jasheen Davis

DE: Diggs/ Jonah Williams/ Foskey/ Rumph

That's where the real position battles are.

Would like to see some of those young guys make the roster considering the age and contracts of the main group.

I don’t think Saunders and Shepherd are safe at all.

Yeah I hope not. Would be nice to see alteast 1 of Boyd/ Foskey/ Diggs show out and move up the depth chart. Ridgeway/ Rumph have been keeping pace from what I've heard. I really don't even know who Jonah Williams is but he's ahead of most the other guys on the current depth chart.

The signing of Bullard doesn't give me reassurance from the younger group tho.

I think Bullard is a guy that Staley is familiar with and he fills a very specific need- run D

Boyd is the guy I’m looking at. I really liked drafting him and I think there’s some potential there.

I also think we’re going to see some weird alignments. Bresee isn’t a traditional DE at all, but he’s going to be lined up over tackles this year. So it could be a thing where we just pick the ~10 best guys and be really weird and versatile

Boyd probably has the best chance as of now. Best case scenario would be for Diggs/ Foskey to out perform some of the older guys and make the cut.

A real struggle today for Tyler Shough. A lot of throwing off his back foot. And then missing wide open receivers in the flat.

I want to say it was two or three games last year. Shepherd had a 15-yard personal foul penalty called on him

Not saying that he was the worst player out there but I don't ever really recall him making any plays. So to me he wouldn't be missed if he didn't make the cut.

I know its early, but I will be pretty surprised if Rattler doesn't start the first few games this year

Any of those guys can bounce in or out in situational situations? Need more beef in short yardage, can a DT/NT candidate line up at DE and not be a liability if it's a pass play. Or can any of those DEs roll inside for a "Nascar" package?

They were both career back ups when they brought them in. I would say Saunders has the better chance of the two of sticking.

Jordan fits where you have him but reports are they have him at Edge/OLB behind Young & Granderson which I think is out of position.

Edge/OLB is extremely thin after Young & Granderson! As mentioned I think Jordan is too old/slow, Foskey/Rumph haven't done anything in the league yet and Diggs is late round rookie.

Broughton's size and style is more inside with hand in the dirt, not edge behind Young/Granderson.

I'd like to see Vernon Broughton (6'5"-311) & Kristian Boyd (6'2"-320) step up and challenge Shepherd (6'4"-315) & Saunders (6'0"-324) for their spots seeing as run defense has been a HUGE problem each of the last 2 years since they've been on the team.

Omari Thomas #74 (6'4"-325) is an undrafted rookie who had his name mentioned twice today with would be sacks.

Guys like Jonah Williams, Jonathan Bullard, John Ridgeway are essentially gatekeepers and capable backups as good depth, but hopefully we have a few people that rise up and out perform them to earn snaps or even roster spots
