I guess I am going to start selling the jigs I make. Several people have asked and I have some dealers who have told me they will buy them, one even said he would give me an endcap. Thus, I am working on figuring out what my standard skus will be. I make swim jigs in 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4 oz and arky style in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 oz. To start I don’t want to have too many skus, that is just more to have to keep in stock. I am thinking 3/8 and 1/2 oz only in each style. Does anyone here regularly fish anything heavier/lighter? I know dealers that have agreed to put them in say 3/8 and 1/2 are all I really need. Does anyone disagree?

Now, for eyes on the swim jigs. Do you pay attention to the eyes when you buy a jig? I have been using realistic 3-d eyes on mine. But they are expensive, literally the most expensive part of the jig. Most of the smaller “custom” jig companies (Dirty, Davis, Coosa, etc.) use stick on flat “sticker” eyes. They are 1/10 the cost and a lot faster. I don’t think eyes even matter to the fish, I have fished them without eyes and done just as well as with them.

Would you pay $.50 more for a jig with raised 3-d eyes vs. flat eyes?

And for initial colors I am looking at:

Black/blue, hematoma, delta craw, bama craw, green pumpkin, golden grass (green pumpkin, watermelon, with some gold accent), bluegill, black/purple, watermelon chartreuse, shad, Eye of the Tiger (black/chartreuse/purple for LSU fans), black/gold (for Saints fans), natural craw, camo (black/brown/army green), and cotton candy.

What other colors are your go to? I am trying to keep it to around 15 colors and the 4 different heads to start; that is still 60 skus to keep in stock.

I just want to make sure they are the best 60 to start so I welcome your feedback.

Edit: I asked you guys for new ideas on skirt colors awhile back (albeit just for personal use at the time) and got some great ideas. Hoping you will steer me right this time too.

Make sure you have a black/brown/amber skirt. I've seen it called camo craw or texas craw. Straight pumpkinseed used to be one of my favorites also.

Good luck with it.

I'd check with LanierSports.

He's been selling tackle for a long time and ties jigs of assorted sizes I believe.

Thanks, I have a black/orange/reddish copper skirt. That is what I am calling delta craw. To start I will just be in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana; Delta Craw is applicable in all and I think more attractive than “Texas craw” to the customer. And it is all about catching fishermen first. My favorite color of all is not even in that list above cause it isn’t very sexy and no one I’ve shown it to thinks much of it (black/blue glitter on top, green pumpkin/blue glitter on bottom with a few strands of sapphire blue accent).

Swim jigs 3/8 and 1/2 oz in white, black/blue, and a bream color

Casting jigs 3/8, 1/2, and possibly a few in 3/4 oz. Black blue, green pumpkin

Some people fish swim jigs in 1/4 oz but I generally don’t.

Pumpkin and pink has been killer last two years for me. Eyes mean nothing to me.

So many jig colors and "wants" for jig colors. I am a custom shop so people call me for what ever color they want and as long as I have the tabs, I can tie them for them. But as for standard colors, try to keep is simple and do go too deep. It will hurt your sales in the long run

A few I tied up this morning for a small order. Some casting jigs and some football jigs. I dont use any rubber banded skirts. All hand-tied with stainless wire

I use Rubber skirting material as well as silicone.

If you do decide to start selling product, let me know and I can give you the skinny on dealing with stores, doing your excise tax and how to calculate things. Its not difficult but I can certainly take some time out of your start up

Glad to help

Thanks. I have been in the outdoor industry as a factory sales manager or independent sales rep for over 20 years. My side gig for making a little extra money was charter fishing, but I have gotten too old and crotchety for that. So I guess I am going to see if folks will buy a few thousand jigs a year to provide some play money. If I have questions on the business side of things I will let you know. At this time I am more focused on figuring out the best initial product mix that will appeal to the most fishermen. There is so much variety in the tackle industry, and it is so localized and regionalized. And I am trying to not let my own preferences drive it (for instance, I never fish a white/shad colored jig; but a lot of people do and there are tons for sale so I will have to offer one).

When I get back in town and have a little time I will get some pictures posted and get some feedback on the product. On a side note, I am in New Hampshire and Maine this week and the temperature is heavenly. I wish I had the time to try to go catch a smallmouth or ten.

Edit: I did decide to make my case packs 6 each (style/size/color), it looks like you do the same. And I have been entertaining the idea of doing custom colors for a minimum of 24 each (mix and match size/style), or an exclusive custom color (again mix and match on sizes/style) for 120 pieces. I will probably also put together a 120 piece prepack (1 case pack -6- of 6 colors each of 3/8 and 1/2 oz swim jig and 4 colors each of 3/8 and 1/2 oz arky jig) to make it easier for the dealer to try out. Again, thanks for the offer to answer questions, I will take you up on it down the road.

Nice. You should have no issues. I have found over the years that Jigs are a very local product for the most part. Especially for a small business like mine. People in a small area have specific colors they like and jig styles they like. When I was at Lake Lanier, I was guiding there and the majority of my jigs sold there. Now that I have moved away from that area and I do not guide there anymore, I dont sell as many jigs. I sell to about 60 stores across the US so I still sell about 10,000 jigs a year but they are not one of the big percentages of my business.

These were for a store in Georgia who order 6 of each size and color when they order. I would say most stores buy 10 ore 12 of each but this is a small store that added some jigs to their order of spinnerbaits and jigheads. I do not offer any kind of quantity deal. I do have people phone call personal orders for 2 or 3 dozen at a time and I do offer them a price break unpackaged.

Stick with the colors and styles that are popular in your area and you will do fine. Not sure where you are sourcing your heads and skirting material from but if you need help there, I may be able to do so.

Good luck

Are you buying your heads? I am molding and powder coating my own. But… I am limited in how many I can produce. It costs me about $.45 cents to produce a finished head. I could just buy them unpainted from cast for (according to their catalog) $.65-80 cents each and powder coat them. With $.40 in a skirt, it would still be profitable and I could produce a whole lot more.

I have my own designs and molds At Cast Industries. Correct I do. Spin cast, not hand cast. Some of my heads are powder coated and some are liquid painted. Depends on the color

I sell about 500,000 total pieces a year. There is no way I can pour myself.

I will tell you this and Im not trying to discourage you. Depending on how you are planning on making your jigs. Rubber banded skirts or hand-tying. I hand tie

Head - .75
Skirt - .40 (average)
Packaging (.15)

Lets say. $1.30 with no labor costs

If you target $4.50 retail, stores are going to want 30 points

Dealer cost around $3.19

With a dealer cost of $3.19, you can base FET (10%) off that. so .32 FET

Add that to $1.30 and you get your cost

$1.62 Total cost

Dealer cost $3.19

Thats rough but you make about $1.50 per jig selling to dealer. Thats what you are getting for your labor. That is not considering overhead.

Jigs are actually tough selling to dealers. I think if I had it to do all over again, I would just sell jigs off my website and not sell to dealers.

Pouring yourself has some benefits but at some point it is a major task. Lead is nasty stuff and it tough to get. If you have a way to get lead, that helps.

I use Mustad ultra point hooks in all my jigs and spinnerbaits. For jigs, I use 4/0 and 5/0 32786 BN. Good solid hook and not overly expensive. Has a very good point that almost never rolls.

Hand-tying takes time and really sucks but I would not use a jig that was not hand-tied. Slide on skirts are easier to manufacture but harder to get a high price. Not sure which way you are thinking of doing that. Keep your sizes simple especially to start with. I do 1/4,3/8,1/2 ounce. The more sizes you have, the more inventory your will need

I do living rubber and they are very popular. I buy my rubber from LivingRubber.com. A 1 pound roll is around $45. I can do 125 jigs from a one pound reel. You add in wire and its right there at .40 per jig. Not sure where you get your tabs. I use Skirts Plus mostly. .15 per tab and they are 22 strands per tab. I make most of my jigs with 55-60 strands. Which is 2.5 tabs. Roughly.

My aim is buy group dealer cost of $3 with a retail of $4.99-5.49. That gives me a little room to offer specials.

That is why I was asking about the 3d eyes, they would add a full $.50 at retail.

Again, I am only looking to sell 1,000-2,000 units to start to provide a little play money. My packaging will be a 3x3” zip lock with stapled header card and a sticker on back for each sku. If it gets bigger I will cross that bridge when I get there. Again, I sort of got roped into this by a couple of guys I work with who said they had dealers wanting to stock them (instead of me just giving them a few here and there.). I have what I think is a good logo and a good (sort of fake) marketing story. And an angle (PG-13, following the Reaction Innovation business model). And already have some T-shirts. Maybe I just make “Big Johnson” t-shirts.

ETA: I am using Mustad needle point 32798 and 32886 black nickel hooks (3/0-5/0 depending on weight). I think they are the best hook for the money.

I am paying $12.50-15.50 per hundred tabs depending on color. I use 44-50 strands per skirt.

If you need bags, look at Action Bags. I buy all my packing bags from them. Very good on price and they have a Ultra Clear bag that looks much better than the dull stuff at Uline. Better service than uline as well

Thats the same packaging scheme I use. I have a header/Backing card with 3x3 bag. I dont use a zip bag for my jigs. Since there is only one in there, I didnt see the need to reseal the bag. Way cheaper.

I am on the GS1 UPC system and that was very expensive. I did it a long time ago. I had dealers that required everything to be on the US system. I have my own parent number as well. If the guys you deal with dont require it, You can just print barcodes through most word processing systems . Id say make your barcodes match your part number for each color/size. Come up with a scheme so its easy for you to remember vs just a arbitrary number.

If you do run across a store that wants you to be on the GS1 system, you can buy numbers off other peoples parent number farirly cheap. I needed close to 1000 numbers so I had to do the whole thing. Total waste of 5K

Good luck. I wish you well with it.

I am banking on being able to “borrow” UPCs from one of the 20 or so factories I rep. My company doesn’t rep any fishing tackle so there won’t be conflict (I wouldn’t even attempt this if there was a conflict).

1/4, 3/8, 1/2 should be good. Some guys like 3/4 for grass but I haven't had a lot of success with anything over 1/2.

red/blk
brown/red/blk
black/blue
green pumpkin

those are the basics... maybe a brown with some orange in it too. Keep it pretty simple.

also maybe some white here and there for the sight fishermen too.

Would love to see the prototypes. I buy my jigs from a local guy these days.

Here are the eye options. These are on 3/8 oz black swim jig heads for comparison. Left side, top to bottom: 1/4” realistic 3-d fish eye, 1/4” blue 3-d insect eye, 3/16” blue 3-d eye. Right side, top to bottom: 1/4” flat blue eye, 3-16” flat blue eye.

I am going to go with the flat 1/4” eye for cost/speed of assembly. But I could always do customs for a customer with the 3-d eyes.

I don’t think it matters to the fish, but it will to the fisherman.
