I guess he's given up on getting a ring.

Could he not have navigated his career a little better than he did?

He became the “ok he’s good enough to lead a team to a ring but he’s loyal to his city” guy. Got to ball out and make clutch plays with nothing really on the line and became a minor legend of his little era. Then left after saying he’d never do it. Didn’t do shite with another star on a perceived great team.

And is now he’s taking his old arse back home.

“Storybook” is not at all how I view his career.

Did he not do that a long time ago?

Well he will likely miss all of next season and still make 70 million.

But i know what you mean.

I bet if you gave him some truth serum he’d say he wished he forced his way out to make a run at a title a little earlier when he was still an All NBA level player. However I can appreciate the loyalty to a smaller market and not hopping around the Warriors, Lakers, Clippers, etc looking to win a hollow ring in a heavily reduced role.

I sound like a hater but I really like the guy and enjoy watching him. Just seems like he’s gotten a free pass from literally everyone, for every thing. Media and folks crowned him way too early and never readdressed it.

Like he was gifted his legacy and could have possibly taken it and turned it into a legitimately memorable career, but, just, didn’t. And then tossed away one of the two things that allowed him to keep his “him” status.

I’m way overthinking this I’m sure, but I think about it sometimes and where else am I going to get a chance to test out this theory?

You’re not wrong. Reading through the tea leaves, he should’ve gone to Boston or LA. Maybe they didn’t want him, but he could have at least tried to make a difference. Going back to Portland seems defeatist and collecting a check. Dame is a “what could’ve been”, without a ring.

I guess maybe he sees it as having a team to oversee his rehab next year, build himself back up in 26-27 then maybe opt out and see what’s there in the 27 offseason. He’ll be 37 but guys are still producing and getting paid at that age. If you’re desperate for a ring you can take a paycut and sign a Buddy Hield type contract for a contender.

I also think Lillard gets overrated a little bit (or used to) because he was in public trade talks for so long. Portland had very clearly hit their ceiling for several years but he did not demand a trade and they did not want to rebuild, so he was that “will he come available this summer” guy for what seemed like 4-5 years

He's gonna be 36 coming off an Achilles next time he plays a NBA game so he might be done anyway.

He's a small guard from Weber St who will be a hall of famer. If he just gets a 20 minute per game ring at the end like Gary Payton it doesn't make him a better player.

I love how you have this take but you criticize KD for chasing rings.

It’s only cool if Bron does it huh

Did LeBron join a 73 win team after he lost to them in a playoff series?

When Dame was on, there was no one better. He despises "ring culture" and while he wants a ring, for him, the journey is more important. I think he went to Milwaukee to "give a try", then go back to Portland when a) the window closed, or b) they win a title.

This is a good interview with JJ Redick; this was right after he scored 71 against Houston. I'm not sure he likes being in the spotlight (being in LA, or Boston). He starts talking about the journey and what he sees is a successful career at 41:45

Dame is very insightful and it's worth a listen. Interview starts at around 11:45 or 11:50
