I played with a group of friends over the weekend and realized I couldn't hear my amp very well.

I've got a Fender GTX50 modeling amp and am debating between a proper stand or a set of the tilt back legs.

Does anyone have experience with either? Some of the amp stands I've seen lay it too far back. Some of the wooden ones I've looked at have the angle closer to what I'd like, but it would be another piece of bulky equipment to bring so portability is also a consideration. Or has anyone used something long the lines of a tire chock? Any thoughts welcomed.

That amp has feet. Should be pretty easy to replace those with some legs to give a tilt back.

Before you spend your money on an amp stand, put it on a chair and see if that gives you throw and projection you seek. Experiment with more midrange too, that will help you penetrate the mix.

You will have your work cut out for you ... 50 solid state modeler watts may simply not be enough for the application.

Also, if you guys are jamming with a PA ... mike the amp.

I agree with this...I've had much better experience putting it on top of a flat surface like a rack case. Not sure if the more solid connection to the ground made a difference or not but it just sounded better to me at a lower volume.

Years ago I had one of those black amp stands for my Hot Rod Deluxe and just couldn't get it to project how I wanted (also felt kind of wobbly at times).

This. Most guitar players have no idea how to EQ their amp or how the tone stack works.

Something like this as previously posted is all you need. Light weight and easy to use.
