IMO he had the highest ceiling in the entire room. Top 60 recruit pedigree and has size, length and range. By all accounts he’s had a strong offseason. The competition for the 2nd safest spot next to AJ haulcy is wideeeeeee open. If spears puts it all together this safety room becomes a strength very quickly

if you are that comfortable with Spears why bring in Haulcy

I'd really love for him to win the spot next to Haulcy. With the quality options at CB, a deep DT rotation, potentially elite edge defenders and a top LB class I really believe this could be a top 20 defense. We also have a very good defensive staff that knows how to use and develop them as well. It's by far the best I've felt about our defense since 2019.

I have no idea what’s been going on with our safeties because on paper we have actually recruited well at the position.

What about Cooley-O? I thought he's supposed to be pretty good as well. Although, I don't remember which S spot he plays.

Insurance? If you're house isn't on fire now, why would you need fire insurance?

Because we had room to add an interception leader and this is the year to do it.

AJ is a diff type of safety than spears. AJ is a good deep safety but he’s much more comfortable playing the middle of the field and wrecking havoc near the box. Spears is a pure deep free safety

And two, safety was our worst spot last year, you don’t wanna go into another seaosn crossing your fingers the young guys take the next step you bring in proven commodities

Because neither Spears nor Cooley have ever excelled at a true safety position in their college careers yet. Spears played some last year but not a ton and Cooley played the slot at NC ST. So basically Haulcy is insurance but I hate that term because Haulcy will start so its not like he's the backup plan.

Him being a FS in the sec remains to be seen. He was purely a nickel at NC state he played little to no snaps at free safety. By all accounts, spears outperformed him in spring camp. I think he’s a better fit at nickel than FS imo

Hit the nail on the head. Had to bring in a proven player at safety. The room has a lot of talented high upside guys but no proven production yet haulcy gives you that.

If Haulcy is a starter (SR), then I’d assume a healthy Gilbert (SR) is the other starter. Cooley (RS So.) & Spears (So) should give us depth and start next year

Surely we can do better than Gilbert. Enough with starting seniority go with the best option. Gilbert quite frankly wasn’t very good at A&M when he was healthy either . The ceiling of this defense rises if Cooley or spears win the job instead of Gilbert

I wouldn’t write him off based off of last year if he wasn’t 100% healthy

If he wins the job he should have to earn it in camp he shouldn’t simply be handed the job because he’s a senior. If he gets outperformed by spears in fall camp he has no business starting over him

It seems like Spears grabs a spot but Gilbert is in the rotation

Yeah why bring in talented defensive backs when the secondary has been a dumpster fire the past two years?

Thanks for the info.

I am interested to see who ends up starting at the safety positions. Regardless of who it is, it's hard to see a world where we regress at that spot after the play we've seen at that position the last couple of years and the players we've added. I think our defensive backfield is going to be a much improved unit with potential to be a strong point of the de. From everything I've heard from media reports, it sounds like Mansoor Delane is the real deal and DJ Pickett, while young, sounds like he's the real deal as well. I'm sure Pickett will have some growing pains, but I think he'll be a great one before his time at LSU is up.

Safeties in the SEC tend to get nicked up over the course of a year.
