Going and playing for the first time Saturday and Sunday. Ranked as one of the best public courses in Texas and #1 overall in Texas by Golfweek. Seems like a hidden gem.

Anybody played there?

Google The Best Little Golf Course on Texas, it's a Golfweek article from about 15 years ago.

I played there a few years ago. Fun course, but I was really underwhelmed. I expected a lot more from the best public course in Texas. It had to beat out some really nice courses in Texas and I just don’t think it does.

Believe it was voted best public course in texas many years ago. I have played there a few times over the last couple years and think its a great course. You will really enjoy it. Its in the middle of the sticks though.

That was a nice read, cool story behind it.

I'm staying at the lodge there and I asked the guy if there was anything around for my wife to do there and the guy straight up said "I've never had a woman like staying here." The article kind of confirms that at the end. It says "resort" but it's really just about the golf.

Not getting to do a practice round so I'm watching youtube videos to try and figure it out a little before I go. Also rocking a torn rotator cuff so it's probably going to be ugly.

Played there last year around this time. It is definitely a hole in the wall place, the pro shop is small and old, and you have to drive deep in the woods down a winding road through some old, dilapidated houses and trailers to get there. The course was nice but to call it the #1 public course in Texas is a bit of a reach, the Municipal in Houston, the Golf club of Houston and Dallas Cowboys Golf Course were much nicer. Go play it for sure, it's in the sand areas of East Texas and it is different than your regular courses around the big city areas, but I'd temper your expectations as to it being the best. Make sure you have plenty of water, it was HOT as Hades when we went this time last year and I don't recall any water or drink stations on course. Have fun!

Didn’t live up to the hype for me. I happened to play on a real bust weekend, took over 5hrs to play. There were groups staked up playing money games. The course is a nice layout and conditions were good but it’s nowhere near being a top public course in TX. Depending on which cabin you are renting, you might want to start looking at Hotel Rooms in Tyler TX for you wife’s sanity. There’s nothing at Pine Dunes for her to do. Most of cabins are barely adequate. There’s nice cabins by the Driving Range but those may be for “Members” only.
Well worth playing but it’s underwhelming

Yea honestly I'm not expecting it to be the #1 public course in Texas. Texas has some fantastic public courses. I mean just in East TX of the ones I've played I have a hard time seeing it being better than the Cowboys and Rangers courses. Even Tempest in it's prime was very nice.

AS long as it's in good shape I'll be happy. It's actually a two day tournament that is like $500 after rooming, so as long as I ain't paying $500 to play a course in bad shape I'll be fine. Honestly I would have dropped out if hadn't already played because my shoulder is going to be destroyed playing a second day

It's going to be hot as dick for sure with an 11:20 tee time Saturday. Sunday is 7:30 shotgun so maybe can beat the heat. I'll be loaded up with a nice water, Pedialyte, and beer combination

I'll let yall know how bad it goes.

All I needed to hear was the guy saying he never heard of a woman liking the rooms and that was plenty enough for me to know not to bring her. Told him I appreciated his honesty. Her folks live in Tyler so she's just going to stay there.

Were the greens in good shape?

Man you haven't been to Cowboys in a while have you? They had to close because for the 2nd year in a row they lost their greens and had to shut down and redo them all. Think its closed for several months. Now Rangers is pristine after hosting the Korn Ferry event.

Play it while you can, when the owner dies the whole thing is up in the air.

O wow Nope it's actually been a few years. That's wild. Greens were in great shape the last time I went. Actually liked the layout at Rangers stadium a little better though.

we play a tourney each september there. 3 or 4 days, rent all the condos on 18th green. have a great time, cook out, drink and play golf. course is always in good shape and not difficult. nothing fancy. just grads from our high school, 68-78 years old. 46th year for the tournament, last few years playing at pine dunes

It's good but not the best even in the Tyler area. The Tempest is better

Yes we are! Just finished all kind of work at Tempest. Its going to be one of the top courses in North Texas in the next few years.

Not hate for Pine Dines though its a beautiful course with excellent conditions.

I love The Tempest. One of the best layouts in TX.

I believe it's private. But a fine course though.
