What’s worse? Everyday BR traffic or the shitshow Mobile tunnel during the summer?

I work in BR but do my best to avoid the interstate. Went to Perdido for a quick weekend trip to a family condo. Tunnel in Mobile was a nightmare on the way there now it’s more of the same on the way back. Should have just stayed another day I guess…

The tunnel is always slow. Sometimes more than others, but always slow.
Baton Rouge depends on the time and the day.

You do realize there’s another way to avoid the tunnel. I guess you don’t

At least I don’t have to hold my breath through BR traffic

it’s ironic so many Louisianans bitch about mobile traffic
Look around, it’s all Louisiana plates clogging the tunnel up to and from gulf shores

Went through the tunnel eastbound this morning around 10:30. Absolutely smooth, no problems. Westbound was fricked. Traffic backed up across the bay.

I bet we get another alternative to the tunnel before Baton Rouge gets a bypass

I do and I’m bypassing it now but the traffic was backed up for several miles before the Daphne/Spanish Fort exit. Any other suggestions? Other than a helicopter or private jet?

Baton Rouge, no question
The tunnel traffic going to or coming from vacation is pretty easily avoidable. BR traffic for daily commutes is not

It’s all part of the experience

Driving around Houston, Dallas, and Austin is worse than either

Take the 2 lane road next to Bucee's all the way to Spanish Fort. Turn right & cross over I-10. Cross bay using causeway & bridge.

That’s why we leave the beach on a weekday

This, but most of the Summer rentals are Saturday to Saturday. That’s why it’s so bad. All of I-10 sucks on Saturdays during the summer.

from a Spanish Fort resident - west bound
Depending on where traffic stops.
1) exit at Malbis, turn right onto 181, turn left onto 31, head west to causeway thru Spanish Fort, once you see I-10, get back on, or take Bankhead tunnel, by the time you get to the BH tunnel, Cochran bridge is a waste of time.
2) worst case - wreck on I -10 has it and causeway totally stopped - see above, at Rousses in Spanish Fort, turn on 225 and head north to I-65, then South to I-10. It’s a 45 minute detour, but I’ve sat upon the Cochran bridge for an hour at 5:30 PM when a wreck happened at the worst possible location to stop everything.

Baton Rouge is always the answer on traffic questions

Where do you get off early to avoid the tunnel going east towards the beach and how many extra minutes would it take to do so given zero traffic?
Posted on 7/13/25 at 3:40 pm to C
Tunnel was mildly slowed coming back west today around 10:30. No problems at all going east last Wednesday around 12:30. BR today was stupid going both ways on I10 at 12:45.
