What if you don't Deck Stain the bottom side of your elevated porch?

A contractor told me don't worry about it, not necessary. But I paid him extra to do it anyway, for peace of mind. I don't want to frick with this deck again for as long as I live.
Is it overkill? Pointless?

It doesn't matter if you already paid him, useless or not.

I'm asking whether it was useless or not.

If it helps you have peace of mind it was worth it.

Mandatory for warranty from the mill.
Don’t skip this step unless you like replacing your decking frequently

How far off the ground? The closer to the ground the more I would say it helps. I have no data on whether it lasts longer, but I gotta think less stuff getting in over time is better.

From a purely aesthetic point of view I think it's a must. It looks unfinished if you don't, but that's just my opinion.

You’ll need to restain in a few years if it gets any sun.

He didn’t say how high off of the ground it was. Mine is three feet off of the ground, don’t think it gets much sun light or anyone sees the bottom. Don’t think it’s necessary.

I have wondered about this as well. The underside of mine is not stained and has not rotted in the 20 years that I have been living in the house.

I stained the underside of my trailer boards

Well I agree with that. I definitely meant if it's pretty high off the ground to where you can actually see underneath.

It will help deter mold/fungal growth. Spray the undersides of the decking with boracare. Decking now a days is total shite. They rot at an alarming rate compared to the wood from the 90's or earlier when chromate treatments were still legal.

I looked this up.
Damn, for half that price I could just stain it.

I didn’t stain underneath mine…it’s elevated from 0’ down to 3.5’ over a slope, it gets plenty of air movement

Ours isn't stained, but it is pretty high off the ground. Probably 6 feet at one end, and close to 12 at the other. I spray the underside with Bifen any time I am spraying the yard for mosquitoes. Worry more about termites than rotten wood.
