OVERVIEW

Duration: 27 Hours

The Jonestown Memorial Tour is an overnight reflective journey into Guyana’s Northwest District, exploring the history and culture surrounding Jonestown. Begin at the Port Kaituma airstrip, the site of the tragic ambush in 1978, before visiting the Jonestown Memorial to honor those who lost their lives. Along the way, take in the serene beauty of the region and discover hidden remnants that were once part of Jonestown’s self-sustaining community. This tour also connects you with the vibrant Port Kaituma community, where you’ll meet locals in the market showcasing handmade crafts and regional goods. If they don't have coolers at each attraction with Kool-Aid in them then they are fricking up...

I still remember watching that on the evening news as a ten year old. Helicopters flying over piles of bodies laying on top of each other everywhere.

No responsibility in being a follower. Like the responsibility to make wise decisions.

Guyana makes some amazing rums.

I don't think I'll ever visit, however.

Same!

Years later, that impression and life experiences were a big contributor to my current thinking about religion and cults…contrasting lines between many of them are more dotted than bold.

Guyana is a fantastic destination for a nature tour. Very little has ever been developed other than the coastal areas. The interior is pristine, other than some gold mining spots. Kaieteur Falls is an amazing place to fly in to and see. Tiny airstrip and no rails at the overlook for the falls. You can look straight down a few thousand feet and one more step will take you over with nothing in the way. Kind of a shithole but it an interesting and fun way.

Do they shoot you when you arrive at the airport?

Blindly following a cult no matter what isn’t a good idea. Unless someone has a family member involved I can’t imagine the attraction of that compound.
