DJT has collected enough money from Mexico in tariffs to pay for the wall.

Promises made, promises kept.

You have to admit, the man is a very stable genius.

One of the best self owns out of many is how Congress wouldn’t give Trump a paltry $8 billion for the wall in 2017, but then after trying to throw him in jail and murder him he comes back and gets $50 billion to lock down the border.

For those with TDS, winning feels like losing because you have to face the fact that you were wrong.

So many people want Trump to fail to their own detriment, just so they can be right on an anonymous message board.

He turned a $5m declined request into a $50m approval. Good ROI.

The Dims really fricked up stealing 2020.

The premise that it was this exact type of indirect reimbursement to which Trump was referring immediately struck me when he said it, merely as a matter of common sense. That so many amongst us dug their little heels in and fought off simple common sense tells us everything we need to know: they are such a strange breed so relatively few in number, they simply don’t even matter. Not for a single thing.

Well tariffs are paid when the goods enter the US….so the exporter is paying it.

Nice talk.

exporter is paying

You could’ve answered this in several ways, but this is the only answer that is explicitly 100% incorrect by definition.

This is like saying the earth is flat.

Tariff can hurt an exporter by curtailing incentive to import from that country, but a tariff by definition is a tax that importers pay their government.

Yeah, this is exactly why all the foreign governments are mad about the tariffs.

Yup. Which, to be clear, is fine.

Forecasting domestic economic effects of tariffs is a lot more complicated. I’m not even going to pretend to be qualified for that — I know I am not.

Still, people being so confidently wrong about something as straightforward as the definition of a word (that has been at the forefront of current events for half a year) will never not be funny.

He may be wrong about how the economy will react to tariffs.

But on this point regarding your thread title, he’s objectively right & you are objectively wrong.

It’s not a matter of opinion. It’s just a matter of knowing what words mean. Can you find me one, singular source that says “exporters pay tariffs”? Just one.

I never said exporters pay tariffs.

I'm in the game. Customs broker who works for the importer pays the direct tariff and they do bill the importer. however it is not as simple as that. To find out who really pays for tariff is really impossible without the master agreement between the two parties.

please point to where I've said anything objectively incorrect.

The reply you responded to was arguing the “collected from Mexico” part.

I don’t really try to make predictions on effects of policy like this on economy, because I’m a layman — but he’s technically correct in pointing that out.

It’s more accurate to say “we put a tariff on Chinese goods” than to say “we put a tariff on China”.

The tariff hurts China because people want us to buy stuff from them, but China is not paying tax to our government. Whatever business is importing from China pays that tax.

The thread title & “collected from Mexico in tariffs”.

That’s why he said “if you ignore who pays tariffs”.

Basically, it’s an import tax. No tariff revenue is collected from Mexico or any other foreign country.
