Why is it “He Stopped Loving Her Today?”

And why does it almost make me cry like a little girl damn near every time I hear it?

RIP, Possum.

It’s that up down song. You know about the bobbers going up and down while I’m fishing and drinking beer!

"You never even called me by my name"

-David Allan Coe

quote:

[Recitation:]
Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
And he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was
Not the perfect country & western song because he hadn't said anything at all about mama,
Or trains,
Or trucks,
Or prison,
Or getting' drunk
Well he sat down and wrote another verse to the song
And he sent it to me,
And after reading it,
I realized that my friend had written the perfect
Country & western song
And I felt obliged to include it on this album
The last verse goes like this here:

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run ned over by a damned old train

[Chorus:]
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standing' in the rain
No, a' you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me
Well I wonder why you don't call me
Why don't you ever call me by my name

I mean it does say so right there in the song:

Because this is what we’ve always been told.

Hard to do just a song. Comes down to whatever is someone’s favorite or has a sentimental tie to.

If we’re talking songs (multiple)… no one comes close to Shania’s body of work in such a short amount of time. She still holds the record for best selling album by a female in any genre. No one can compare to her, although people try to compare her to Underwood and Swift. Her impact likely led to both of these two in the first place and changed so much in country and crossover music.

ETA…

"You never even called me by my name"

Steve Goodman and John Prine.

Made famous by DAC.

"The song "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" was a collaboration between John Prine and Steve Goodman, but Prine chose not to take credit or royalties for it, viewing it as a "novelty song". Goodman, feeling indebted, gifted Prine a Wurlitzer jukebox as a token of appreciation. Prine later stated he didn't want to offend the country music community by claiming authorship of a song he perceived as a parody of the genre, according to American Songwriter."
