Best app to establish and track handicap?

Just got back into golf a year ago and have been regularly shooting in the mid to low 90’s but I’m clueless on what it takes to establish and track my handicap. Any suggestions?

My buddies have all used The Grint since 2020. You can either log your scores as you play or do it after. It will do all the calculations to get your score differential for the round. It will then give you a range for your handicap if you don't have an official GHIN. It's very easy to figure out your exact handicap, though. You just look at your differential for your best 8 rounds and average it. What we like about the grint is it's like our social media. When someone starts a round, our groupme usually fires up to make jokes and comments as we follow their round.
If you want to have a serious handicap, pay the annual fee for USGA membership and track your scores on the GHIN app. I use this and The Grint . The apps connect with one another.

If in Louisiana, join the LGA. You’ll get a link to download the GHIN app and you put your scores in. Easy.

This is what I use as well, and started at the same time. Got all my stats too, so I'm invested. Is there probably a better app? Maybe. Will I switch? Nope.

Yeah, there is no way to switch. You can't export your scores. So, I feel like I'm stuck with The Grint because I love being able to go back to rounds from years ago.
By the way, I have no problem with the grint, but I found an app for our buddies golf trip called Squabbit that is incredible for tracking games. I figured I would start using that for rounds and uploading after to GHIN. That's when I realized I could not get my data off the Grint.
I'll add to this post just to throw some more praise on Squabbit. It is completely free and has no adds. I think the creator just loves golf games and the app. On our golf trip, we did a Ryder Cup with a side Skins game for the whole group. It was all tracked and done flawlessly on the app. After the trip ended, I was curious how a few other variations of games would have ended. It was so simple just adding games to the trip with the results posted. I can't recommend the app enough if you are the guy that manages bets/games during a round.

Either create your own profile on your state's golf association website, or if you're a member of a club, get your pro to do it for you so it will show that your a member of that club.
I keep score on The Grint App though, and it syncs with your official GHIN.
I do have the GHIN app to stalk other people though.

LGA membership is like $30 bucks a year and you get the official handicap on the GHIN app/website. I think I pay $8 a month for mine through my club but that allows me to play in the Arkansas MGA tournaments.

GHIN
$40 a year.
Most clubs will help you get it.

No reason to get the GHIN app unless you're playing in tournaments that require an index. It's just throwing money away when there are free apps that will track your handicap for personal knowledge and for tournaments that simply ask what your HC is.
Garmin Golf is free, 18 Birdies and The Grint both have a free version that will calculate your HC.

There is no reason for me to have more than 14 clubs, but I do.
Ultimately, everything is a waste of money.
At my home club, it’s GHIN or play as scratch. We tried other ways, but we found that there are some who are able to outperform the number they give us with amazing consistency.
If I was plus or scratch, I’d save the $40, but I’m not so I fork over the fee.
It’s like 10 cents a day.

If you need a GHIN, like I said, it makes sense. It doesn’t make any sense to waste money on it when there are other free options just because.
Justifying it because you waste money other places doesn’t make it any better. There are other options that are better (because they’re free) that do the same thing.
Someone who just wants to track their handicap has no need for a GHIN index.

Wrong. I can create a spreadsheet that is more accurate than some of those apps. GHIN is the only official tracking accepted

I’m stuck with GHIN bc it’s the only one accepted for our club events.
They make anyone without a GHIN play as scratch.
I play about 200 rounds per year. $40 does not move the needle as far as the money I’m spending on recreation.
I walk most of the time. So I guess forgoing 1 or 2 cart rentals pays for the GHIN for me.
I wish I was scratch so I wouldn’t have to track it, but that would take talent and hard work. It’s just easier to pay for the GHIN
