Bally Sports collapse finally recognized.

The NBA just wrapped its accounting on the 2024-25 season and pegged basketball-related income (BRI) at $10.25 billion, according to someone familiar with the accounting who was granted anonymity because the details are private. It’s a key number for players, as it determines how much of their salary they get to keep from last season.
The news is not great for players, as they will forgo more than $480 million from the escrow fund set aside to make the math work in the shared-revenue system laid out in the collective bargaining agreement between players and the league.
Stephen Curry gets dinged the most as the NBA’s highest-paid last season at $55.8 million—he also made an estimated $100 million off the court. Curry will forgo $5.1 million, and other players taking big haircuts include Joel Embiid ($4.7 million), Nikola Jokic ($4.7 million), Bradley Beal ($4.6 million) and Kevin Durant ($4.5 million).
The CBA calls for players to receive 51% of BRI. The NBA withheld 10% of player salaries last season to ensure that the revenue split was achieved. Overall revenue likely came in light due to some combination of the choppy local media environment

This is the flip side to the "they make too much" argument. What NBA (and NFL, etc.) players make is a set % of total revenue. As long as the particular league is making a ton of money, the player will benefit in direct proportion.

Nah we should just ignore that and players should get paid based on my personal feelings on the sport and in comparison to how valuable I think it is to blue collar jobs

Call me a dumbass but you're going to have to explain this to me.
"Taking a haircut" is a financial slang for incurring a loss on investment.
Did they mess that up somehow?

I assumed they just meant players taking a big cut included those players.
I've used haircut in terms of asset depreciation but never applied it to a salary.

Can you explain this point to the WNBA?

it's a tough concept to explain in sandwich-making terms

When is the NBAPA going to start bitching about funding the WNBA?

Fair. I think you can use them term because the portion of salary set aside I assume could have went up as well as down, so that portion was basically invested in the league vs being pulled as salary.

Yeah I think it can actually work in this scenario because the way their salaries arent technically set, they are an asset.
Ill remove it from OP.
I wonder if this affects players on the league minimum?
Bronny might be in trouble.

Right. The money is obviously being generated, so either the players or the owners are going to get it.

WNBA salaries are a joke.
Their revenue is also inflated.

Would eliminating the WNBA help eliminate the shortfall?

No worries. The WNBA will loan them some money.
