I have been a fan of the older Star Trek shows. TNG, DS9, Enterprise, and Voyager. I even really enjoyed the first two Star Trek Kelvin Timeline movies. I always wanted more Star Trek content but I can't stand any of the new stuff made by Paramount. I feel like The Orville is more Star Trek than the crap Paramount puts out now. Am I crazy or does anyone feel the same?

There is an older and even better one.

The Orville and Strange New Worlds are really great watches.

That's the one with Captain Pike? Yeah. That series is decent. I can't stand the Mary-Sue Michael Durhnam and Picard is no longer "Picard".

Really? I can understand not liking the 3rd one with Idris Elba, but other two are decent watches. I thought they did an really good job with casting.

Yes.

It's good, I promise.

TOS and the other series treated the subject matter seriously and were thought provoking sci-fi…which was always Trek’s MO. TNG, Voyager, DS9, continued this model.

The newer material seems to be just a bunch of drama, yelling and silliness. Drinkers assessment was spot on IMO. Early Trek had the feeling of a group of adults, that were part of an established hierarchy, dealing with thought provoking issues…..the newer movies and series are a bunch of kids running around screaming at each other or being so unstable that you’d never give them any authority.

Watched TMP and WOK on Pluto just a week ago. Both were so well done but had totally different vibes. The first 4 movies were peak Trek IMO. The later movies also had their moments.

“What does God need with a starship?” is such a great line.

Star Trek V has always gotten a lot of hate but I imagine most Trek fans would kill for anything close to it these days.

Kurtzman Trek is garbage. A waste of fine casting with ridiculous water park starship engine room designs & overly bright bridge lighting.

I know a lot of Star Trek fans believe that THE WRATH OF KHAN is peak Trek. Nice to see a fellow fan of The Critical Drinker.

I put TMP and WoK at a tie for the top. TMP was a Kubrick 70’s style sci fi spectacle that was too long…to brainy…and absolutely awesome. The Enterprise reveal, Kirk taking control, Spock sorting out the value of human emotion vs total logic….VGer…the hot bald chick….awesome.

WoK was a perfect movie. When you watch it …given the bloated shite today…it’s amazing how tight and good that movie was at slightly under 2 hrs. Kirk aging overlapped with the Genesis device…Khan showing up…Kirk using his experience in 3D space to win…Spock giving the ultimate sacrifice. Holy shite.

You are and will forever be my friend
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few

So fricking good.

ETA: what happened to the writers that used to produce movies like this?

ETA2: also Kirk using coded coms because they were being monitored, Saavik noting protocol for raising shields that Kirk ignored to disastrous results and then admitted it, khan being goaded into chasing him into the Nebula….all small things but so well conceived and believable in the context.

That's a good clip.

When I saw Wrath of Khan in the theater, I hadn't remembered ever seeing the original Space Seed episode. I finally saw it, and was struck at what an unusual episode it was. I don't know if Gene Rodenberry had planned to revisit the character in a later story line, but it sure felt like it was set up that way. The movie did an amazing job, which is why many view this as THE best Star Trek movie.

Didn’t Roddenberry really dislike Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan?

I’ll catch up later this morning, but truly remember that being truth.

Yeah, Gene disliked a lot of stuff. One in particular was his reduced role in the making of WoK.

"Roddenberry was upset that he had been replaced as the film’s primary producer by Paramount"

He also didn't like the lack of "science" to explain the Genesis project. Star Trek is famous for both its super advanced tech but also grounding it to some form of real world foundation. True nerds love this stuff.
