1991:

Rolled through the regional and CWS 8-0 with one one-run game over Oklahoma in the regional. Probably the run that was the least hard on the heart of all of them. The 6-3 final against then-power Wichita State was a little bit close, but no heroics needed, although Armando Rios hit a 2-run shot in that game. That team committed one error in the entire tournament run on top of all the HRs they hit.

1993:

South Regional - Lose to Kent St. in Game 2, have to come back from the loser's bracket, beat Baylor and then South Alabama twice to get to Omaha.

Win the first two in Omaha, including one over Long Beach, lose to Long Beach in the first semifinal game, enter the bottom of the 9th in the elimination game down 5-3. Score 3 in the bottom of the ninth to reach the championship game. Brett Laxton does his thing to bring home title no. 2.

1996:

Down 6-0 to UNLV in Game 2 of the Regional, go on to chip away at the lead, eventually scoring the go ahead run in the top of the 7th, taking a 7-6 lead and keeping that for the win.

Then, of course, in Omaha, the shot heard round the world in the 50th anniversary edition of the CWS. Other than that little thing, the CWS was pretty uneventful (from a heart attack standpoint).

1997:

Lose Game 3 of the Regional to South Alabama, next game elimination game against, who else, Long Beach, who takes a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the 7th, we tie it in the top of the 8th, then go to extra innings, which we win by scoring 7 in the top of the 11th to win 14-7. We then breezed through two wins against South Alabama to reach Omaha.

Once there, we face Rice in the first game, who takes a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the 8th, and we then score three in the bottom of the 8th to take a 5-4 lead to victory. We breezed through the rest of the tournament.

2000:

Breeze through first two games of regional, enter the top of the 7th of the regional title game tied with ULM 3-3 (yes, Smoke Laval's ULM), LSU scores two runs in the last three innings to win 5-3 and sweep the regional, get to Omaha and breeze through to the finals.

We all know what happened against Stanford there. They take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 8th, we tie it on 2 HRs, get to the bottom of the 9th tied 5-5, then Theriot and Cresse do their thing.

2009:

Need 10 innings to beat Baylor in Game 2 of the regional, otherwise no other heroics needed.

Roll through Omaha to the title series against Texas. Game 1, UT hits 3 solo HRs in the bottom of the 4th, to grab a 6-4 lead going into the LSU half of the 9th inning. DJ LeMahieu does his thing, drives in 2, takes it to extras, then LSU wins in the 11th. LSU drops game 2 after a UT pitching gem, and pours it on in the final game to win number 6.

2023:

Face Oregon St in Game 2 of the regional, enter the bottom of the 8th tied, score 1 run to win the game 6-5.

Lose to Wake in Game 2 at Omaha. Come back from the loser's bracket to an elimination game versus Wake Forest. Greatest pitched game by both teams in the history of the CWS to get to Tanks 2-run shot to win in the bottom of the 11th 2-0. Face Florida in the title series. In Game 1, LSU homers in the top of the 8th to tie the game (Tanks again). Beloso homers in the top of the 11th and LSU holds on to win 4-3. In Game 2, LSU gets blown out in the most runs scored against in the history of Omaha (or something like that). Game 3-LSU blows out UF.

2025:

LSU rolls to Game 3 of the regional, then gets whomped by sub-.500 Little Rock. Gets down 5-1 early in the elimination game. LSU cuts the lead to 5-4 in the 4th. Ties the game in the 6th, and takes the lead in the 7th. Goes on to win going away.

In Omaha, LSU sweeps to Game 3 v. Arkansas. Arkansas takes a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the 9th. A flubbed ball by the first baseman with one out, a missed DP by the SEC POY, a ball doinking off Davalan's glove in LF, a decision to pitch to Jared Jones and another ball going out of a glove later, and LSU wins 6-5. LSU wins as easily as a 1-0 game and a 5-3 game can be easy to beat Coastal for No. 8.

can't talk about 1996 without mentioning the 18 run 7th inning against Ga Tech in the regional

in 1997 they didn't breeze past South Alabama to go to Omaha
It was a doubleheader that day in conditions about like West Va was like

Yes, I thought about mentioning that, but I was trying to focus on the times when we were on the ropes and pulled it out. I got the idea because I happened upon a Razorback post-season post-mortem podcast, and it was sad hearing them talk about how all these little things never go their way. They kept saying if they could just get past LSU etc etc. It made me think how unbelievably fortunate we have been as a fan base in those similar situations.

That may be, but the games were really never in doubt, with LSU winning 14-4 and 15-4. LSU was up 11-4 after 4 innnings in Game 1 and 11-2 after 4 innings in Game 2.

Again, I was trying to focus on gut wrenching situations that we always seem to pull through.

Of course, we've had our share of gut-wrenching moments...the most obvious being Paul Carey's moonshot off Big Ben to get to the finals in 1989 - which would have ironically been against Wichita State who won their only title that year; and the Bregman boot v. UCLA in 2015, an all-timer of a great team not winning it all; or even the bad luck of having to face a well-rested UF pitching staff after pulling off one of the greatest moments in the history of the program beating 56-4 Oregon State back to back.

But, we have been outrageously blessed by those moments much more than cursed.

Lord, if only a TD had existed back then when LSU lost to Kent St. and UNLV had us on the ropes. Skip would have been compared to Curley Hallman.

That 1993 run was really, more than anything, very fortunate. I mean, how we got out of that Long Beach situation still baffles me. For whatever reason, back then I always listened to the games on the radio instead of watching them (I think, for heart health, somehow the video made it too real), and I can just remember that whole sequence at the end of the Long Beach game with Jim Hawthorne calling it like it was yesterday. I can't find it to link to it, but it was unbelievable.

Great post. Goes to show that, no matter the era or talent level, it takes some magic to win out.

The 93 run was the first one I remembered anything about for LSU...I was hanging out at my cousin's house and heard my uncle hollering at the tv in his bedroom...it was the Long Beach St. comeback...after that, I never missed watching a Tiger game in Omaha.

FTR, my same uncle flew up to watch them beat Coastal, so some things haven't changed for him either.

solid post. I remember most of them as I was graduating HS and attending LSU around the third one.

Was asking this question the other day. Do we think LSU still has 8 if the format was always best 2 of 3 in championship game?

Do we take 2 of 3 from Wichita State, Miami, or Stanford?

Tigers winning aside, this was the best baseball game at any level I have ever watched. The pitching, Tre Morgan’s scoop and save, and Tommy Tanks (as you mentioned).

So fricking intense. Every pitch felt like the weight of the world was on it. For both staffs to go through 21 innings with no runs in that type of situation was astonishing.

That is a hard one to answer. I have thought about it before. It's extra hard because you don't know if Skip and the other staff handle things differently knowing they will survive to another day. Like, for example, maybe we lose to Miami in 1996 in Game 1 because Skip decides to hold back on a reliever for Game 2 or whatever.

I had an earlier post talking about those Wichita State teams. That was a budding dynasty that never got off the ground because of Skip. His Miami team denied them in the title game in 1982, and we denied them in 91 and 93 and also beat them in the 96 run. They used to win 50+ games EVERY YEAR. Could we have beaten them in 2 3-game series within 2 years of each other? I'll say......yes!
