For those that hunt public and pack out the meat, what back packs do yall use? Can it fit the meat in addition to your gear?

I have looked at the tidewe external frame 5500cu.

There’s no way I would want to walk through the woods with an external frame pack.
I have a ebrelstock internal frame pack that I have used to pack out several deer and it does great.
Most any internal frame pack 2500in -4000in capacity will hold a boned out whitetail with no issue and will be more comfortable to carry as well as being able to cinch it down tight and use as a day pack when not hauling meat.

Internal frame. I’ve used a badlands 2200 a bit and it will expand and pack a quarter. Not great, but will work. I currently have a Sitka internal frame that’s around a 5000. Very light and I use it as a hunting pack while elk hunting.
If you need to go cheap, look at used. Mystery Ranch is a great brand.

An external frame 5500 in3 pack is big enough for a few days overnight backcountry hunting.

Not that one though. If youre on a budget and need a good external frame pack a surplus MOLLE rucksack will fit an entire quarter up deer easily. I made my first 3 or 4 elk hunts with a surplus ruck. Not ideal, but cheap and durable and made for packing heavy.

I go back and forth between a Mystery Ranch Mule and an Eberlestock X2. I can haul more meat with the Mystery Ranch but the Eberlestock is way more comfortable and ergonomic as far as holding gear. I can fit a doe with my gear on either with no problems. Have to make two trips for bucks.

This is about half (shoulder, ham, strap, neck) of a midwest buck plus the cape on the Mule. I bought it secondhand and the frame is too long for me so I use the X2 now. Where are you located? I'm thinking of selling the Mule. I have a Pintler pack that attaches to the frame as well.

Didn’t know it was Chinese.

Probably won’t get it now.

Looking for something that can just fit my gear and meat when I kill.

Anything designed for packing meat will work for that. Exo, mystery ranch, stone glacier, kihfaru, kuiu and others all make external frame packs that are made to split the pack from the frame to shove meat between the pack and frame. Exo k4 is probably the best, but its highly subjective and I dont think the best is needed for someone who doesnt live out of it for half a season.

Like hat said, secondary market on rokslide.com is excellent.

If youre military or LEO the various sites for those groups usually sell eblerstock and mystery ranch stuff.

As someone else has said, eastern deer hunting with an external frame pack can be awkward. Ive done it with my ruck a few times, you aren't getting in a regular beer stand with that thing. The purpose built hunting packs that cinch down tight are far better.

Ok cool. From what i see, the external frame looks to be weird to use here.

Do the brands you listed make this?

Yes, not as well as the Eberlestock but I used it for saddle hunting for a year. My biggest gripe with it is how noisy the fabric is when you go rooting around for snacks. Like Downshift has said, the external frame packs are bulky and hard to get around with in thick woods. You could probably get an Eberlestock X2 for around the same as a used Mystery Ranch. My Mule is a great pack but it's more tailored towards western hunting while the X2 fits with eastern whitetail hunting a lot better. I you're LEO/military or have a friend who is their are sites like Guidefitter that heavily discount. Eberlestock has a 15 or 20% military discount on their site as well. They put them on sale regularly. I think I paid ~200 for mine brand new.

I'd rather go with a cart personally. Might be something to checkout if it works in the area you hunt.

Yes, as far as I know every hunting-oriented external frame backpack is made to cinch down with integrated straps. Not all of them are made to carry stuff between the pack and the frame. A rucksack for example doesn't work that way, but also is not made for hunting. Anything that calls out having a meat shelf or load shelf is saying that its designed to have the pack separated from the frame for shoving meat in between the two.

YouTube is loaded with comparison videos. I wouldn't believe anything anybody posts on the internet but it does give you a chance to see the product in more than just a static picture and get an idea of how it works and if it will work for what you want to do.

For what its worth, I never found a good way to rig up a lock on and climbing sticks to a hunting pack. I've had better luck just using backpack straps on the platform with the sticks lashed to the platform. It can be done but it typically has to be done in a way that makes the pack largely inaccessible and then you haven't gained anything over just toting the platform directly on your back.

ETA: As others have said, an internal frame pack might be a much better fit here. A quartered deer is not very big and a deboned one is not big at all. A deboned 150 pound whitetail buck could easily fit in a 2500 in3 internal frame pack with the horns lashed to the outside.

It's an internal frame.

Got it, I'll shoot you an email. I think the X2 would be work better for you than the Mule in this case. Mystery Ranch does make a couple of different internal frame packs. I think they're called the Treehouse and the Popup.
