A striper kit works best on cool season grass. Most striping I see down here is from a roller on a reel mower.
What type of grass do you have?
I would probably DIY a pvc pipe and fill with sand if I wanted to stripe centipede, St. Aug, or taller zoysia.
If you have bermuda get a reel mower. That’s step number one in improving appearance.

Dragging the pvc filled with sand sounds like a good idea.

I stripe the living shite out of my yard with a striping kit I bought from Big League Lawns. I have mostly St. Augustine and some Bermuda grass and it stripes very well.
True story: I was cutting grass yesterday evening after work and an older black guy stopped to ask me about my striping kit. He said he passes my house every day on his way to and from work and was always waiting to see me cutting grass so he could ask how I stripe it so well. We had a ten minute conversation about it.
Striping kits 100% can work on warm season grasses. What I do is I cut the grass going about half speed then after it's cut, I go back over it again slowly and it really makes the stripes pop. I also have two 15lb dumbbells attached to the striping kit so it weighs it down some more. On a sunny day, the stripes look amazing.

And still, a striping kit works best on cool season grass
Yes, it can look good on taller St Aug, but as you do, you really have to “burn it in”. Now get rid of that Bermuda!

Cool season grass just looks better striped. St aug looks good because it’s taller. My zoysia doesn’t stripe great but mostly because I keep it short and it has so much horizontal growth. If I have time I’ll double cut it to really get the stripes down.

I actually had no idea that attachments were available to do this!

I would post them but I have very recognizable features in my yard on a major highway so it’d give away my identity. I’ll try to take pics this weekend in a way that won’t give away who I am

quote:The added weight is what you need to truly stripe warm season grass using a rotary mower. I’m going to assume you have a riding lawnmower, because I’m not dragging 30+ pounds behind a push mower in 90+ degree Louisiana heat.

Yes, I've got a riding zero turn that I use. This is the kit I use:
I've got two dumbbells strapped to the middle of it to add the weight. Before adding the weight, I had to go over each stripe 3 times, now I get a good stripe with one pass but I still go over it 2-3 times if I have nothing else to do since that REALLY makes the stripes pop. I cut the grass at about 5" height as well.

Yeah figured, plus the 5 inch height helps.
I cut my Bermuda at 1 inch with a reel mower. I don’t even try to stripe it at that height, and the striper is only there to weigh it down to provide a more even cut.

Another thing I do is I turn the blade off after cutting the entire yard since it just messes up the stripes after it's already cut. I think the wind from them spinning just blows the grass blades in every direction which is obviously not something you want. So when going back over each stripe, I make sure the blade is off. May be common sense but it took my dumbass a couple weeks to figure that out

I know you have two little ones. Imagine them trying to play tee ball with grass blades up to their knees

You can definitely stripe warm season grasses, even St. Aug, but the lawn has to be healthy. It still wont be a pronounced as cool season grasses, but it's doable. I did it several years ago without a striping kit, just double passes.

TifTuf at 1”
2 lb roller on a manual reel.
Maybe if I went over it twice I’d have something.
