A&M - 0.1 innings, 3H, 2ER
A&M - 0.1 innings, 2H, 2ER
Arkansas - 3 innings, 2H, 0ER
South Carolina - 1.2 innings, 4H, 3ER
Little Rock - 1.1 innings, 3H, 4ER
My God he’s been bad, but threw three solid against Arkansas. I hope we see some redemption for him tonight. He needs a confidence boost

He’s an experienced starter who has shutdown many teams. It’s in him. Now is the time to shine.

Just need to give a few innings and limit the walks. If he could go 3 scoreless, that would be massive. LSU also needs to show up and help out the bullpen today on offense. Probably going to be need at least 6 or 7 run tonight to secure a W

Leaned on the changeup too much and teams figured it out.

I just don't think this is accurate. It's not like teams didn't know this guy was fastball/changeup until May. He is not locating as well and his changeup isn't as sharp. If he gets it back, it won't matter that hitters try to adjust to it.

There was also a long stretch where he was the best pitcher on this team and that’s saying something. He’s got it in him

I do think a portion of it is just regression to the mean statistically. His stats were probably "too good" for his stuff up until that point. His overall stats are still good and more in line with his ability. I think that's who is-- not the first part or the second part-- just the overall season.

It absolutely matters. Just watch his last few outings. Opponents were expecting the change so they weren’t chasing it low and when it was hung they hammered it.
The easiest pitch to hit in baseball is a hung changeup that you’re looking for. It’s also one of the easier pitches to lay off of if it’s down, if you’re expecting it.
By the end of May, everyone seemed to be expecting it. He isn’t Trevor Hoffman, Johan Santana or Tom Glavin. For his changeup to play he has to at least be a threat with his fastball.

It's all about confidence. His body language, etc. Mike the Tiger needs to put a scare in him.

I'm down for Cowan at this ball park. I think he can be effective. But man.... that rain delay really fricked us. Imagine if Ant couldve gone deep and we had Casan trotting out there tonight.

It is what it is. You need to start him.
If he can go 3 or 4 innings and hold them to a max of 3 runs, I’d say that’s a win. Anything better than that is just icing on the cake.
FWIW, I like Cowan against Arkansas more than UCLA. Arkansas is far more aggressive at the plate which could work to Cowan’s advantage assuming he’s throwing strikes. I think UCLA would’ve forced him to throw more strikes. I think today’s zone will also play a huge part in his success or lack thereof. I know the zone is important for all pitchers but it’s even more imperative for those who don’t have overpowering stuff.

Now go ahead and post the more realistic options that didnt pitch in the last 4 days that are clearly better

This is still not entirely accurate. They can sit on that pitch because he's not locating his fastball. Obviously you're going to sit on the change up until it's a meatball if you can't threaten and set it up with the fastball. It's that simple.
His change up is extremely good but if you're a one pitch guy, it fools nobody.

Hi problems all started when he began pitching from behind, not locating, and hitters getting in favorable counts. He does not have elite stuff to pitch from behind.
If he can get back to pitching ahead and locating his pitches, he's tough.
He reminds me alot of those UCLA pitchers who will never blow you away, but are crafty enough to locate and mix velo.

Yep. It all comes down to if he’s locating, his repertoire is good enough to give us 5 innings of 1 run ball if he locates with the different pitches he throws.
But if he is not, he’ll get the quick hook and we’ll be down a couple

So, exactly what I said.

I agree because it's totally true.

quote:correct. he started having trouble locating pitches and overcompensated in bad counts by throwing the ball right down the middle.
