Ippei Mizuhara, the disgraced former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, is in federal prison in Pennsylvania, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told ESPN on Monday.
quote:
The Dodgers fired Mizuhara in March 2024 after an ESPN investigation revealed he sent millions in wire transfers from Ohtani's account to an illegal bookmaker. He pleaded guilty to bank fraud and filing a false tax return in June 2024, admitting that he placed about 19,000 bets with the bookie over a two-year period and accumulated over $40 million in debt.

I have yet to see anyone come with evidence that he was just a fall guy.
Except people saying, "no way Ohtani didnt know! OMG!"

I'm just kidding. Most reasonable people would have absolutely no idea that they have 40 million dollars missing from their bank accounts. We all know Ohtani is innocent

Im not a Dodgers fan, but this isnt a strong argument. Especially for a foreigner that spent his entire life in bubble.

That’s his rumored debt he racked up from gambling debts. He only stole $17 million from Ohtani.
Of course Ohtani would have noticed $40M, but it’s easy to miss $17M.

Is his walk up song for pitching really Michael Buble?

I would think Ohtani would miss 8x his annual salary.

It's happened to many athletes over the years. They have so much money they have people that deal with it for them. They aren't really looking at their accounts very often.

I feel quite comfortable saying with extreme confidence that a Japanese athletic phenom has a slightly higher level of numeracy than the average American athlete. or just the average American actually
comparing the two is…silly

The person he would have looking at his accounts wouldn’t be his interpreter. You have to be a complete moron to think Ohtani was oblivious to this.

Reading the Fed's complaint I believe Ohtani was innocent.
He opened the account where his game checks would be deposited in 2018 and nobody logged into it for 3 years.
Then when the interpreter got access to the account in 2021 he started draining money.
Money from endorsements and other stuff outside of his salary was handled by his agents and accountants. The interpreter told them that Ohtani wanted the game check money account to be private so only the interpreter and Ohtani would have access to that game check account.
Since his agent or accountants didn't speak Japanese, all communications with them went through the interpreter. The accountants worried that there would be tax implications with interest generated by the game check account but the interpreter still said the account should be private and only accesible by Ohtani and the interpreter.
So yeah, it's totally plausible given the evidence uncovered by the Feds that Ohtani was innocent.
The interpreter made sure nobody from the outside checked the account he was draining and Ohtani never checked it. He trusted his interpreter.
Criminal complaint

Maybe it's a good time for him to step away from betting for awhile.
